BMI partners with iBiquity on new music initiative

Well, that seemed rather vague on the details, didn't it? It almost sounds like like iBiquity wants to dedicate an entire subchannel on stations to up and coming artists, the way SiriusXM does with popular musicians. I've never been a fan of that approach; if I'm a big fan of someone like The Beatles or whoever, chances are I already own all the music I want to hear, myself. I certainly can't see someone going out and buying a (non-existent) HD radio just to listen to unknown bands, either.

Perhaps it's more to get HD radio advertising out to the concert goers who are going to see these artists, but again, new music like that is rarely heard on radio, HD or otherwise, so I doubt any young person sampling a new artist is going to be interested in buying any kind of radio to further explore whatever music they like.

Of course it does. iBiquity doesn't own any radio stations, so it can't actually program a station. All they can do is provide content to stations who probably aren't interested in such a channel. In my view, it's a way to put out a press release, and attempt to show PROs like BMI that they're supportive of new music. But they can't actually follow through with anything. Perhaps they're getting paid for it, as Sirius often does.

Depends on the format. CHR, Urban, and Country have high percentages of new music. What radio stations don't do is segregate music represented by BMI.

I really don't think it's going to work, Kids only listen on there Phones for new music

HD Dying, why is iBiquity trying to beat it to death
