Bob Bogle of rock band The Ventures dies at 75

That's sad news. From what I read, he hadn't been playing concerts with the Ventures for awhile. I was so happy to see them get into the R&R Hall of Fame last year. They inspired so many people to learn to play guitar.

RIP Bob!

I recall an interview with Joe Walsh about ten years ago when he said hearing "Walk, Don't Run" was what made him decide absolutely that playing rock and roll was what he wanted to do.

My personal all time favorite instrumental ever. (With "Perfidia" not far behind)

Many artists have recorded the classic pop tune, “Perfidia”. Glenn Miller did a sort of laid back instrumental of the tune … but from the Big Band era, I consider the best to be the uptempo Benny Goodman Orchestra recording featuring Helen Forrest’s vocals.

Bob Bogle did no harm with his guitar rendition, and in fact, he added a lot to the composition with his note-bending artistry. The Ventures followed the original jazz jump beat stylings but added to the flavor by bringing a solid percussion and bass line up front.

In addition to the Ventures version of Perfidia, I also have Xavier Cugat's on my iPod (also a pure instrumental). I'm also familiar with the ones you mentioned. Its truly an apples to oranges comparison, and I like all of the renditions to one degree or another, but I personally prefer what the Ventures did with it. IMHO, many...if not most...rock remakes of older standards are mistakes. But I thought the Ventures added some real life and drive to an already good tune and improved upon it.

There is a great Ventures DVD out "The Ventures Gold" GRTS Hits 30th and 40th anniversary.......Two different concerts on one Video, 44 cuts, several repeats, but, worth It. Both concerts feature the return of guitarist extrodinaire Nookie Edwards........I was watching it with friends by coincidence the day Bob Bogle died.
Here is the Irony to this disc....the first half of the disc did not include Bob Bogle (for whatever reason) but had Mel Taylor (Before his untimely death)....the second half had Bob Bogle back, but not Taylor (who had passed by then) and featured Mel Taylor's son on drums, who is now the Ventures new drummer.
I was 13 when I first heard the Ventures and was a fan, for life. There is a big problem with the vast radio listening audiences and how un-informed they really are...The Ventures really only had, say Five major hits (Walk Don't Run, Perfidia, Hawaii-Five-O, Slaughter on tenth Avenue, and a couple of other things) but they covered so many big hits Immediately, on their 88 Lps, that most people credit them with "Pipeline", Wipeout", "Out Of Limits", "Penetration", "Percolater Twist", "Ram-bunk-shush", "Apache" ,almost every major instrumental of the 58-64 era. The Ventures don't help by referencing in Concert, those songs to their LP's.
The Ventures sold a ton of records and alot of folks probably heard some of those songs for the first time on Ventures LP's, and were not aware of the origin. RIP Bogle and Taylor, and RIP...Markettes, Chantays, Surfaris, Little Joe and the Thrillers, Jorgen Ingman, etc.

Great post, hornet. I've seen a few cuts from the "Ventures Gold" DVD. Yes, the Ventures had their own little industry going with the LP covers of what seemed like "damned near everything." Their version of "Sleigh Ride" (complete with a riff from "Walk Don't Run") also is one of my all-time favorite Christmas tunes.

Outside of their covers, their stuff, is very original and very good, I agree, "Perfidia" is a Rock "n Roll Classic. For the ultimate Ventures Fan (or just plain freaks like me), there is a Russian import 2cd set on mp.3 format, featuring 34 Ventures original lps in their entirety (yes, that is 34 lps on two cds ,amazing, huh). Cd 1 (1960-1967), Cd 2 (1967-1996) and more recently the Ventures released a 3cd set (63 cuts)on Castle Label (A major re-issue label) re-recordings of their hits, not the original studio versions. The Castle recordings are pretty good, maybe a little faster than the originals.
