Bob Hilton, ex-KOVR Newsman, acquires part of KAHI

I used to do their traffic with Dave Rosenthal, who I hear is still there. Small market radio doing what it does best, serve the community. Nice folks up there.
 
KAHI seems like a cool little station. I can pick up KAHI at my home in South Sacramento, but only at night. I listen to the sports network--A's, Sharks, and Kings.

I walked by the station last year when it was holding its "50 years on the air" celebration. It's a cool little station--the studios are directly on the street just as stations used to be and it's very small and locally controlled. Reminds me of the "old days."
 
I have to agree. Great little station, serving their community. For some reason I thought they were going to have to abandon the 950 frequency for an expanded band station tho. Obviously that didn't happen, but did the X-band station ever get built? Anyone know?

It's a well run station with a group of people that have a passion for radio and the community that they serve. Wow, imagine that, serving the community. We could all use a little of that kind of spirit in radio now days. But really, I know the GM at KAHI Jerry Henry, he and I went to the same high school and were in the school's radio classes at KWHS and he's got it together. He was our morning man back in those days and really had the student body listening, wondering what he would do next and that's how you keep listeners, by keeping them interested. Bravo KAHI!
 
IIRC, the X-band of KAHI is what is now known as KSMH-1620, part of Catholic Family Radio and run (in part) by local broadcasting fixture Bob Dunning.

KAHI and KSMH are actually owned by Immaculate Heart Radio www.ihradio.org , a separate organization from the now defunct ( I believe) Catholic Family Radio. The latter company owned 1640 in the Bay Area and 830 in Orange County.

Bob Dunning hosts the Bishops Hour on KSMH.


KAHI is still owned by Immacualte Heart and LMA'd by a local group in Auburn. The stations have an STA to continue operating past their five year deadline due to a petition that was filed on behalf of the x-band dual operators and several minority leaders. I'd have to dig in the FCC database to find the petition but, it goes like this...Rather than turning off one of the stations, why not sell the less desired station to a minority broadcaster at a discount. The petition was signed by many of the X-band dua; operators as well as several minority leaders. I don't know how that would play with KAHI or KSMH since both operators are arguably non-minority.

KLIB and KFSG are operating under an STA as well. I do know there's an effort to preserve KAHI as a local voice for Auburn. Again the minority issue would be in play depending on the ruling of the petition.
