Bob Kemp is leaving KDUS and The SportsZone

The news was revealed on today's Extra Point show (July 11) by co-host Kayla Mortellaro. Neither she nor Bob Kemp will be on the KDUS airwaves starting next week - final shows are tomorrow, July 12.

Bob says it is not a health-related departure, and that over the next few weeks he is open to new opportunities.

So ends a 22-year run for The SportsZone on AM 1060, and also a unique sports radio host.

I only heard part of the show, and there hasn't been a press release from Mother Hubbard that I can find.

I believe Kayla has a management role with them, but I don't know her status after tomorrow. Kemp had a health scare a couple years ago. Maybe that has something to do with it, regardless of what he says.

I myself heard the news off the show podcast, not live. (That's your Mother Hubbard press release!) You are correct that Kayla is in management and Bob missed 3 months in 2022 recovering from a mini-stroke.

What struck me today is that Bob didn't mention retirement, and neither host said the show will continue with new hosts. Feels as if KDUS will finally be 24/7 syndication + paid programming.

No new info from today's show finale, except Kayla is indeed staying with the company and continuing to host the Hubbard public affairs show "Valley Focus" on Sunday AMs. This led to a little radio industry banter from Bob to Kayla.

"I have some time, can I guest on your show?"
"Suuure, what nonprofit would you like to promote?"
"Um, the Help Bob Buy a Big-Screen TV Foundation?"

What is surprising is that KDUS is actually outperforming KGME (albeit a .1 share versus hash marks, mind you these are 6+ ratings), and the latter (last I checked) has a local morning host.

If Kayla reads this board: maybe pick up Jim Rome and the rest of the Infinity Sports Network instead of running SportsMap. It's a better product, and no longer carries the CBS branding, which Hubbard was somewhat weary of. They can keep Dan Patrick until he retires, as well as Rich Eisen. Then KQFN can be all sports betting, all the time, except for afternoons.

My bad, SportsMap is no longer a thing and KDUS is running VSIN (just like KQFN does) after hours. Grabbing Infinity Sports Radio, poaching Jody Oehler from KGME), or both would be an improvement for KDUS, given that iHeart doesn't really care about its sports AM anymore.

This'll be the first time since KDUS signed on that Kemp hasn't been heard on 1060. He had been on One-On-One Sports before being hired here.

Kayla has also apparently left KDUS as she is now the sales manager at Arcis Golf in PV. KDUS also brags they have 6 hours of local sports shows weekly. Still no word from Mother Hubbard as to why they were let go.
