What you fail to understand is that middle-aged males are the target of political talk radio. Especially conservative ones. It taps into certain "frustrations" that they have with current affairs and allows for an outlet that is more satisfactory than the somewhat more left-leaning newspapers or other media outlets.
Like it or not, that's the target. That's who listens to this type of radio. And, it's also why AAR will never have more than a tiny fraction of the audience that the big conservative talkers do. It's not that there are so many conservatives, it's that they often share this interest and gravitate to this type of radio. Much more so than liberals.
Also, have you ever wondered why conservative talkers get good (sometimes great) numbers in fairly liberal markets like New York, San Francisco, and (yes) Boston? Because, conservative talk radio is an outlet that provides a place where their opinions are shared. Unlike other places. And, these are folks who often feel like other radio/TV outlets are biased to the left. So, there's a lot of loyalty to a given station too.
Again, it's a level of interest that is not shared by those on the left. So, forget having a leftist host on WTKK. After trying to go with the middle ground, they have found success to the political right. And, that's how it works in radio.
