Boston sports guys: Street-walkers of the media

Last night as I was driving back from Logan Airport I laughed myself silly as Bob Lobel (the 'why-don't-we-get-players-like-that' Bob Lobel) teamed up on 96.9 with Mike 'sent to Siberia' Barnicle as they both discussed the plight of education in Massachusetts. I kid you not. Bob Lobel.

Now, this is the latest blatant example of sports media HACKS street-walking themselves to whomever will pay them beer money. Lobel, washed up as he is, can see that the sports segment on the WBZ news (which no one watches anyway) is being whittled down to nothing. With some big bills to pay, Lobie needs a source of cash. And with the handwriting on the wall that says Bob and guys like him will go the way of the dinosaur, Bob decides to put on his stilletos and see who will take him. Scott Wahle, Ed Harding, Gene Lavanchy, Mark Okerbloom and probably NINE others I can't name have also put on their heels and gone out to do news anchoring.

[EDIT] newspaper guys pop up on radio and TV; TV guys (Boo-chie from 25) on radio; radio guys weasel their way into TV.

Funny as can be for such a sad lot of media hacks.

Yeah, Lobel came across as REAL smart talking about schools. What a loser he is.

[EDIT-vulgar]

Chris, just an FYI. Bob has bachelors in education from Kent State and Masters in Education from the University of Vermont. How about you?

My BS degree from Bentley and MBA from NH, but I'm not the one out there as a holier-than-thou media hack. Lobel is a member of the nearly-dead breed called 'Local TV Sportscasters.' I just think it's hilarious that he's grasping at anything that'll pay milk money because the need for 'Local TV sportscasters' is just about kaput. Having Lobel do what he did last night is akin to asking Lucille Ball to explain quantum physics.

I've enjoyed Bob's laid back and sometimes humorous ("Sports Spotlight") sports reports over the years
but it is true--that part of the newscast is being cut back though around here Red Sox/Pats fever
do help keep it alive (and there are the spinoff Sunday night sports shows).

It is true that sports anchors have often moved up to reg. news--Bryant Gumbel also comes to mind.
I don't know if I'd call Lobel a loser but plagiarist Barnicle is not quite on my list of must-listens. Do they
dare actually take a phone call for once? I'd much rather have WTKK pick up Dennis Miller than keep
"A Yuk On Every Page" on the payroll.

A sound sample of Bob Lobel during his WJOY/Burlington VT days. 1971.

BS from Bentley and Masters from UNH? Bentley is like single A baseball and UNH's masters programs are like Matchbook U. Why so much disdain for someone who has entertained so many, so well, for so long? In addition, is there anyone who had done more charitable work in the city of Boston and beyond, as Lobel? Your level of anger is sad. Don't be so envious.

Come on, how can you defend Lobel? Man, he's a tired, grumpy, impatient hack. Who cares where he went to college.

Was his girlfriend sitting in the shot behind him, or was she too busy trying to get her 'sideline pass'? :D

HEY. My sister went to Bentley... so watch it :D

actually, I've never really gotten Lobel's appeal but those are pretty impressive credentials. Knowing first hand the amount of work that goes into getting a masters, I have respect for those who accomplish that.

UNH is hardly Matchbook U. Talk about stupid comments....

Good hockey team, too. But, that's about it. Name one other prominent person from UNH besides Natalie Jacobson.

It really is tough not being Massachusetts...the state that the other 49 laugh at. We all can't have prominent people like liquored-up Kennedy (choose among many), Mumbles Menino, Deville Deval. Messachusetts is 'prominent' all right...a frigging LAUGHING HYENA of a state. Enjoy losing an electoral vote and a congressional seat down there as illegal crimalien freeloaders run roughshod over tax-paying citizens and drive them out. Yeah, you're 'prominent' down there all right.

The great Lobel, if you remember, spent significant time in the granite state of NH. He worked at WMUR radio and TV, before moving on to WBZ, and legendary status among the media greats of Boston. Maybe covering the UNH Wildcats and the 1-AA football team got a little tedious. At least now you have the Manchester Monarchs and the Nashua Pride. Tax free NH, huh? Ever sit in the heavy traffic from Manchester down into Methuen in the morning. It's Live Free or Die-hards heading to the Bay State to work. You never have a traffic tie up from Methuen until Salem and beyond because you don't have anything we need. If you didn't have Massachusetts to keep you afloat you'd be part of Canada. You do have Canoby Lake, though. Thanks for that. Enjoy paying those property taxes.

Agreed...Howie Carr is actually hoping we lose a seat or two. Get rid of some of these hack Representatives, etc.
As for Kerry and Kennedy, they will probably never retire: you will literally have to pry the Senate seats
out of their cold dead hands. Would the ketchup queen leave "Lurch" if he were to not run for re-election?
One gold-digger married to another...married to his second wife, and to her first husband's trust fund....
It would have been interesting having Jane Nurse Fuzzy Wuzzy as first lady, though. Memories of her
telling that Pittsburgh reporter to "shove it", ah, the lady has class (and: "you said something that I
didn't say"--but she did! ha!)
