Breaking news: Channel 3 & 15 Choppers collide & crash at Indian School Park

Per Channel 5, those stations' choppers were involved. Live coverage on 5, 10, and 12, with 3 breaking in at 1 announcing the loss of their crew (pilot and photographer). Nothing from 15 as yet. They're running regular programming. No names of either stations' crew have been announced.

Very tragic.

Re: Breaking news: Channel 3 & 15 Choppers collide & crash at Indian School Par

I'm deeply saddened to hear such news.

As far as releasing the names of the crew members goes, I have heard that 3 TV's Bruce Haffner was not in the accident.

Re: Breaking news: Channel 3 & 15 Choppers collide & crash at Indian School Par

Craig Smith was the Chopper 15 pilot. Channel 15 finally broke into their soap opera and has been running tape of Smith's dialog, including trying to notify KTVK's chopper that he was directly over them.

They were covering a slow-speed chase, so there were 6 helicopters (5 TV stations and Phoenix P.D.) on the scene.

Re: Breaking news: Channel 3 & 15 Choppers collide & crash at Indian School Par

Very sad.

Do we really need every station with a helicopter chasing after every little thing in the quest for ratings?

Too many stations spending too much money chasing too many stories trying to be first on air and first in the ratings.

I had to stop watching local news years ago, its just garbage anymore.

Re: Breaking news: Channel 3 & 15 Choppers collide & crash at Indian School Par

Geez, now we have KTAR crowing about how they are "The only radio station covering this live!"

The irony of that is lost I'm sure.

Re: Breaking news: Channel 3 & 15 Choppers collide & crash at Indian School Par

Liz Boyle on KOOL has been doing an excellent job keeping us updates on this accident since it happened. John Michaels, the news director, also did a report on it just a few minutes ago.

Re: Breaking news: Channel 3 & 15 Choppers collide & crash at Indian School Par

Pilot Scott Bowerbank and photographer Jim Cox were the personnel aboard the Channel 3 helicopter. KNXV phographer Rick Krolak and Craig Smith, as well as the men from KTVK, are confirmed dead.

There is possibly a 5th person, but it's not yet known (or at least not announced) which chopper he was on.

(Edited to give the name of the KNXV photographer, which was just announced by the Republic).

KFYI has David Leibowitz anchoring their coverage.

Best (worst) picture is on AZCentral.com showing two helicopters in the air going down.

Thoughts and prayers to the families.

Re: Breaking news: Channel 3 & 15 Choppers collide & crash at Indian School Par

Its sad and ironic, everyone is trying to best everyone, and that is why we had a crash in the first place.

Too many copters covering too little news to fill up too much time. All about who is the fastest and the flashiest and the highest rated.

McBland was saying that it happened over C. Steele park.

Perhaps Pat was thinking of his favorite cafe from the 80's?

Good for Liebo filling in!

Re: Breaking news: Channel 3 & 15 Choppers collide & crash at Indian School Park

What a tragedy!
Thank God no one else on the ground was injured or killed (I assume). That was a miracle.

This is dangerous business when you have that many choppers in such a small area -- and really, for what?? A slow-speed car chase?

Really sad.

Despite the story about a 5th person, apparently it was just the 4 men on the choppers that died. Nobody was near the crash site.

Every pi**-ant thug in the country wants to be O.J. and every TV station does this for ratings. Unfortunately, the raving desire for news ratings became a personal tragedy for 2 TV stations and cost 4 people their lives.

The only choppers that had any business in that area were the ones from the Phoenix Police Department. Hopefully television stations nationwide will think twice now before polluting the airspace with their news crews while the authorities are trying to fight crime.

Re: Breaking news: Channel 3 & 15 Choppers collide & crash at Indian School Par

I realize the anchor staff at channel 3 are a mess right now.

But, I just had them on, they showed them getting the guy from the chase, and one of them opined something to the effect of "I hope he realizes what he caused and faces the music"

Sorry, but he didn't cause the crash, what caused the crash is 5 freaking TV helicopters all trying to get the news on a story that isn't worth the death of 4 people.

Its not the runaway driver's fault, its the headlong dash for ratings and the hyperactive news staffs here that need to fill their sensationalistic quota.

first of all my thoughts and prayers go out to the familys that lost thier loves ones. im very angry at channel 5,are they that thoughtless to show a photo of the 2 copter going down.didnt they think that the familys or friends could be watching ,then the lady anchor asked the reporter to ask mike watkins of tv3 how he feels about the crash!im glad i watch 10 and not 5 for the news.

Re: Breaking news: Channel 3 & 15 Choppers collide & crash at Indian School Par

The live video from 15 is out on the web. And channel 5's live video of the copter crashing into the park is out now.

I just heard the channel 3 anchor again say "I hope he realized what he caused"

Disgusting

Leg, my friend the runaway driver DID (indirectly) cause the crash that led to people DYING. Any halfarssed shyster lawyer would tell you thats 2nd or 3rd degree murder - (not sure of the qualifications for those).

The choppers would NOT have been covering the chase - IF THERE WAS NO CHASE. The ruanawy driver indirectly caused the crash.

First and foremost, my thoughts and prayers go out to the colleagues, families and friends of those who died today. This was a tragic and terrible accident.

The type of journalism you describe above (i.e.- inappropriate questions after a tragedy) is exactly why I chose never to enter the field of newspaper or television journalism; being a DJ was more my style. Why ask the question: "How do you feel..." when you exactly how the person feels by reading their facial expression. If there are tears in the eye, that should tell you exactly how that person feels.

I don't want to engage in nitpicking and debating what happened and why it happened, though. Not today. Let everyone have time to mourn without criticism.

They're doing the best they can considering what happened. The folks at 15 have kept their cool for the most part. I won't fault either station for anything. Both stations' coverage has been top-notch.

Per Phoenix P.D., the suspect could indeed be charged in the crash. The County Attorney's office hasn't said anything about it yet.
