Breaking News From The World Of Alabama Radio

Here's more details about the WALQ fine. Taken from this link: FCC Report 10/23: $22,000 Fine For Thirty Years Of Improper Operation - RadioInsight

P.S. Time to put this station out of business once and for all.

An $11,000 fine was proposed against Augustus Foundation’s 1130 WALQ Carrville AL. WALQ failed to file an extension of its Silent STA when it expired in November 2021 and continued to be silent until a new STA was filed to operate with reduced power in March 2022. The station was also operating under a one year license renewal as prior owner Westburg Broadcasting Montgomery had failed to consistently operate the station. The station was supposed to file a renewal application by February 1, 2021 but did not until June 27, 2022 due to health issues with the board member whose duties were to do so.

Just discovered that Mr. Fred Randall Hughey is now buying back his old spot on the dial. I tell you, Mr. Augustus does indeed have issues, if he's bailing out of the Carrville/Tallassee area. For more details on this breaking news story visit: https://fccdata.org/?lang=en&facid=68309

P.S. In my honest opinion, Mr. Fred is a better fit for this spot anyway. At least, the man kept the station on, had a great presentation and did everything by the letter of the law. Kudos to him. (y)

In closing: I wonder if the WACQ program and calls will be moving back to this spot, once the sale has been completed.

More details about the WALQ sale back to Mr. Fred Randall Hughey. Taken from this link: Station Sales Week Of 11/4 - RadioInsight Knowing Mr. Fred, I see him moving WACQ back to this spot and doing something else with AM 580.

Hughey Communications purchases 1130 WALQ Carrville/Montgomery AL from the Augustus Foundation for $25,000. Hughey operates Classic Hits 580 WACQ/98.5 W253CZ Tuskeegee via LMA.

Calls on 1130 and 580 might be swapped once the sale is finalized. btw, some in here may not know, but the WALQ calls were being used in the area before AM 1130 ever had them. WRJM 105.7 (now WZHT) licensed to Troy briefly used the WALQ call sign (for about a month's time - Oct '87 - Nov '87) when the station changed from soft AC to a mainstream AC format known as "Magic 105.7". I remember hearing the WALQ call sign on 105.7 during that time, as I listened to WRJM quite a bit and noted the alteration of the format (from soft to mainstream AC) and the odd-sounding call sign which didn't resemble the word "Magic" at all (I have an aircheck of the station ID somewhere floating around on a cassette in my bedroom closet). In November of '87, 105.7 changed its call letters to WMGF to more appropriately reflect the "Magic" branding.
