Ellie Greenwich who helped forge the sound of the second decade of Rock N' Roll died at 68. She and husband /collaborator Jeff Barry along with the Hall of Fame writers housed at the legendary "Brill Building" took the gritty sound of early Rock n' Roll(aka. R&B) and brought it to white America. The sanitized sound of the Brill Building located at 1619 Broadway proved to be a winning formula for all the great writing teams, Bacharack and David, Greenfield and Sedaka, Hugo and Liugi, Pomus and Shuman, Boyce and Hart, King and Goffin and so many more. Her Influence was evident for decades and was culminated with the Broadway production of "Leader Of The Pack" in tribute to her. She also enjoyed brief success as a singer with her husband as the Raindrops. Her songwriting credits are long and amazing. My favorite group the Beach Boys recorded a Greenwich song "I Can Hear Music". My wife and I walked down the Aisle to "Chapel Of Love"......in the words of Gary Lewis and the Playboys "Sure Gonna Miss Her".

Dick Biondi on WLS-FM last night did a tribute to her by playing several of her tunes including "Hanky Panky" by the Raindrops.

That was a good play by Biondi....Hanky Panky was the flip side of "That Boy John"......which may have suffered a quick exit from the charts due to the timing of the JFK assination. I always thought Tommy James wrote that song, till recently.

I also thought Tommy James wrote it. Anyone know where I can get an MP# of the Raindrops version?

Make sure that you also check out the Kathy Troccoli version of that one (with the Beach Boys on backing vocals) on the Beach Boys tribute album, Stars and Stripes, recorded here in Nashville with a number of country artists singing Beach Boys songs, with the boys themselves backing up those artists. (Granted, Troccoli is not "country," but she is Nashville-based, which may be why she appeared on that album.) This album came out around 1996 or so. I only have the cassette single ("cassingle") of Troccoli on "I Can Hear Music" from that one.
