Bristol Palin in Dancing With The Stars finals: Good news for "American Idol"???

Bristol Palin in Dancing With The Stars finals: Good news for "American Idol"???

As you already know, Bristol Palin is in the "Dancing With The Stars" finals (knocking Brandy out)...and millions of viewers are starting to turn off the show though it has been pulling in huge ratings for ABC week after week.

This news may have opened the door for "American Idol", on track to become the #1 show for the seventh consecutive season when it returns in January. Okay, so viewership has dropped in recent years, there has been a lot of drama behind the scenes, but Fox's promo department has been going into overdrive hoping to welcome distraught DWTS fans to Idol...and it's starting to work.

Let's face it: If all goes according to plan, and with the additional help of Super Bowl XLV and "Glee", Fox may once again dethrone CBS to end the year as the #1 network. Of course the real battle will begin when DWTS returns in March, going head-to-head with Idol.

Junk is still junk. The Super Bowl is the only "quality" program in that list and it is only a one-time event and usually leaves a lot to be desired as a football game. Based upon season-long measurement I don't think CBS is in any danger.

Fox "may once again dethrone CBS as the #1 network"? When did they do it before??

I have to agree here. I mean something has to be number one right? You could put a test patten on and get ratings. Was't there an old joke that M*A*S*H was so popular you could put a test pattern on after it and still have a top ten program.

...Bristol Palin is this season's Sanjaya ;D ...

The 2007-08 season (with the help of both American Idol and Super Bowl XLII), only to be reclaimed by CBS the following year.

But as far as Idol is concerned? Even with those changes, their chances at becoming the #1 show for the seventh straight season have all but disappeared. This year could finally belong to "Dancing With The Stars" as they have kicked Idol's ass last season in the ratings (but not enough to unseat them) and will do so again when it returns in the spring.

Like I said before, the last ABC show to end the year at #1 was "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire" in 1999-2000. Ten years is long enough for them.

Of course, no matter what happens, CBS will still reign as the top dog.

Re: Bristol Palin in Dancing With The Stars finals: Good news for "American Idol"???

I've enjoyed many ballroom dancing competition shows on PBS, but this show on ABC is bad television from start to finish. I do not understand the appeal of the program at all. The list of "stars" is usually peppered with names I don't recognize or people I've heard of, but don't consider stars. Bristol Palin is not a star. She is the daughter of a politician. Her only other claim to fame is being an unwed teenage mother. She's getting support from people who like her mother. Her dancing is probably okay, but not as good as others. Her advancement over other better dancers is creating frustration among viewers. It's hurting the franchise and will probably hurt ratings. I think a fair number of people will give the show a "second chance" and come back for the next season of the show. But it could really suffer if this kind of thing happens next time.

That's kind of what happened to American Idol. Idol started to slide when Sanjaya kept advancing on less-than-stellar singing performances. Last year it slid because it didn't have the goofy antics of the perpetually weird Paula Abdul to keep the viewer's interest. This season it will suffer some from the loss of Simon Cowell, but may benefit from some curiousity viewing by people who want to see how Jennifer Lopez and Stephen Tyler do as judges. It's a narrow window of opportunity for Idol this season though. If the opening rounds of judging the bad singers aren't as entertaining as people are used to with these new judges, it could really crater in the ratings.

Yeah - for about a week, two weeks tops. IMHO, anyway...

According to a story in my local paper this morning,
the following happened when Bristol Palin won "Dancing
With The Stars" for the seventh time:

1. Her opponent, Brandy, cried.

2. A man in Wisconsin shot his set in disgust.

3. Bloggers are saying things like the ballot box is
being stuffed by tea-party activists. Her scores
from the judges were lower than Brandy's; it was
the viewer vote that put her over.

ABC is standing by the results.

Indeed, he went Elvis Presley on his set (hope it wasn't an HD model):

(Yes, perhaps the subject line could have been worded differently, but that's exactly how I feel about it.)

Re: Bristol Palin in Dancing With The Stars finals: Good news for "American Idol"???

Every dial-in vote for Bristol is a potential hidden underground vote for her mother,
which is why this is really causing certain people to become unglued.

It is happening despite the extensive attempts by the media to disparage the Palins.
If she wins it means the public is starting to vote on things to SPITE what the media
is telling them, which has them really shook-up.

Re: Bristol Palin in Dancing With The Stars finals: Good news for "American Idol"???

Both DWTS and AI are nothing more than popularity contests. The viewing public has very little technical knowledge about the finer point of dancing and I really doubt the few experts are watching DWTS. AI was essentially the very same thing for singers - which is not all that uncommon a skill.

Re: Bristol Palin in Dancing With The Stars finals: Good news for "American Idol"???

The website "Vote For the Worst" has been promoting Palin for several weeks (just as they did with Sanjaya in American Idol).

Re: Bristol Palin in Dancing With The Stars finals: Good news for "American Idol"???

So if Bristol does win the competition, you can bet Olbermann, Maddow et al will point to that website bringing her all of the votes. ::)
