Broadcast Pioneers of Phila. luncheon will honor WIBG May 20th, WIBBAGE reunion

On Wednesday, May 20th, the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia will honor WIBG as one of our market's all-time greatest radio stations, that ruled the air waves in the 50s and 60s.

I will be the moderator and MC and my panel will include these original WIBBAGE Good Guys:

Don L. Brink, aka Scotty Brink
Rod Carson
Frank X. Feller
Ray Gilmore, aka Sean Casey
Jerry Stevens
Dean Tyler
Bill Wright, Sr.

Would you like to come out for the fabulous WIBBAGE Reunion? It all takes place at the beautiful Bala Golf Club, 2200 Belmont Avenue in Philadelphia! Just moments away from Channels 6, 10 and 17 and the radio stations in Bala Cynwyd. This is going to be huge. You don't have to be a broadcast Pioneers member to attend. Reservations required.

Sam. Just made my reservation. I'll be there. Should be a great afternoon. Rene.

This will be an awesome WIBBAGE Reunion. Lets see if anyone can get this trivia question: name one thing Rod Carson & Sam Lit have in common, even though it happened in different decades?? Got you thinking! Good luck! and type carefully.

I'll be there too...with wings on. I loved that radio station. Sam & I visited with Rene a couple of years back, and I was enthralled at the BASEMENT. All that STUFF from the old days. I wish I had a van. If there are ghosts there in Laffayette Hill, they're the rockinest ghosts and some of the greatest entertainers EVER. The ones who are still with us should be honored they had the incredible chance to work there. Perhaps they didn't realize it at the time, but they made a VERY big impression on guys my age and folks who grew up in WIBG's prime years.
Break a leg Sam. I'll be takin' notes on your performance. No pressure. BE BIG!
Jay Sorensen

My mom would have killed me if she knew that at 12 years old I rode my bicycle from West Oak Lane (1963) to LaFayette Hills just to see where WIBBAGE was located. I remember having chills up and down my spine hoping just standing there looking at the building and the towers. I was just a few years later in 1969 when it returned to "the real WIBBAGE" after the Drew mess and (they realized they could no longer go after WFIL) I sent a letter to Joe Niagra from Vietnam asking him to read my address on the air and requesting "the impossible dream" be played on the air. I remember going to mail call getting hundreds of letters which I passed out to all the guys who did not get any mail. It was mostly girls who wrote. One of the guys dated one of the girls and eventually got married. They are still married celebrating their 38th Anniversary.

Jeff, I give up. What’s the answer? Give me a hint? Rhymes with? Sounds like? Comes after? How many more questions do I get?

I got it!!!! I should have realized the answer when I saw your name. We both worked Allentown Pa. radio. (Rod, 790/WAEB, me, 1320/WKAP). What did I win?

Sam, why aren't there any heavyweights--Don Cannon, John Landecker, Don Wade, Bill Gardner...among many others, scheduled for the reunion? Were they invited?

Landecker's name popped into my head as well.

I'm not supposed to release this information yet, so keep this quiet, but there is going to be a WIBBAGE reunion part 2, "the '70s' coming up later this year that will include participation requests from the aforementioned heavyweights. This months Pioneers luncheon theme is focusing on the 50s & 60s legends and the begining and rock & Roll roots of the WIBBAGE dynasty years. By the way, Hy Lit Radio Technologies has one of the largest archives of recorded Philadelphia broadcast history and I will be playing actual original on-air broadcast segments and jingles of every WIBBAGE jock prior to my introducing them at the luncheon. I'm like doing nothing but editing all weekend and I promise this will be totally off the charts. The quality of the sound we have doesn't get any better.
Incidentally I will also be playing an interview I conducted this weekend with Charlie O'Donnell (Wheel of Fortune) and his Philadelphia broadcast origins.
