Broadcasting And Cable Releases List Of Top 25 TV Networks In Terms Of Revenues

While most of the attention to ranking of networks both in the industry and among the general public focuses on the popularity of programs and networks, Broadcasting and Cable each year publishes a list of the top 25 television networks not in terms of ratings, but in revenues.

This is a link to the list and a related article from Broadcasting and Cable.com (registration may be required).

According to the list, CBS was tops in revenue in 2005. Second was the cable-shopping channel QVC, and third was ESPN.

The only network on the list to show a drop in revenue was NBC, partly because it's 2004 revenues were inflated by the 2004 Summer Olympics, and partly because the network's 2004/2005 and 2005/2006 (thus far) prime-time programming has seen a substantial decrease in viewers. NBC should rebound in terms of revenue in 2006 thanks to the Winter Olympics, and starting in September, "Sunday Night Football".

However, I would not be surprised if QVC and ESPN are the top two networks on next year's list. QVC's 2005 revenue grew at a faster rate than did CBS'; and ESPN's revenues may see a big increase with "Monday Night Football"; perhaps enough of an increase in revenue to finish on top or second behind QVC.
