Broadcasting pioneer Paul Harvey dies at age of 90

"Harvey was born Paul Harvey Aurandt in Tulsa, Okla. His father, a police officer, was killed when he was a toddler. A high school teacher took note of his distinctive voice and launched him on a broadcast career.

While working at St. Louis radio station KXOK, he met Washington University graduate student Lynne Cooper. He proposed on their first date (she said "no") and always called her "Angel." They were married in 1940 and had a son, Paul Jr..."

Yes I remember Paul quite well. He and Johnny Chick, I mean Johnny's chick were quite an item back then. Harvey won the bet regarding career income. They can chisel that into his headstone. Me, I'm still alive and plan on outliving Paul by at least 40 years. My prayers are with Paul Jr. The Harvey contribution to broadcasting is enormous. I believe he was ashamed of what the industry has become. I am too. I'm glad Paul Harvey won't live to see the industry he so loved wind up in the dumpster. Well done thou good and faithful servant!

Did anybody hear Joe Riddle on KRVT today? He talked about calling Paul Harvey's offices at 6 o'clock one morning to tell them about a funny bumper sticker a listener saw involving Harvey... and realizing after he got off the phone, the person on the other end of the line has been PAUL! 8)

I had the same experience that Joe did. In 1983, I'd left Tulsa for Salina, KS as News Director at KSAL (one of the several stations Paul worked for). We were an ABC Information affiliate and carried Paul Harvey. One morning I had a particular news story that my morning man thought we should phone in to Paul Harvey. His number was listed on the ABC Network phone directory. I made the call and was astounded when Paul Harvey answered the phone. I gave him the story, he thanked me and I went on about my business. The next morning when I was making my beat calls, the sheriffs office where I found the story the previous day, was all a twitter....Paul Harvey called the dispatcher to confirm the story. He ran it on his noon news that day. Yes, he answered his own calls, did his own followup, and wrote his own scripts. What a great Tulsan, and Great Oklahoman.
