"9 hours ago — Key West, FL – Michael Stapleford Magnum Broadcasting has filed a $250,000 deal to buy soft AC “Key 93.7” WKEY-FM from Buddy Shula's Radio One Buffalo."

Full report:

"Key West, FL – Michael Stapleford Magnum Broadcasting has filed a $250,000 deal to buy soft AC “Key 93.7” WKEY-FM from Buddy Shula’s Radio One Buffalo. Magnum Broadcasting has operated the station under a local marketing agreement since 2023. The filing says the LMA fees will apply toward the purchase price. Magnum Broadcasting already owns talk WPIK (102.5) and AC “Keys Party Station 105.7” WGAY in the Florida Keys. Once the sale closes, Radio One Buffalo will still own two AMs in the Buffalo-Niagara Falls, NY market."

This should give Buddy more time to make his new acquisitions as successful as his existing Oldies operation.

I wonder how anyone makes much money in such an over-served and tourist driven market as Key West, and I say that as someone who's really enjoyed several stations down there. They have their work cut out for them.

Key West is among a number of such over-served and tourist driven markets. Others include the U.S. Virgin Islands and Traverse City, MI.

Interesting. Key West also has an LGBTQ focused radio station. WGAY. Looks like a similar format to KGAY. Different ownership though.
The WGAY owner has been LMA'ing Buddy's station for several years now. This brings him up to 3 local FMs. This sounds like a smart move to give Buddy more time for his Buffalo expansion.

I am waiting for Mr. Shula to buy one of the full-signal FMs. I suspect I will not have long to wait, either.

I can probably answer this, since I own one down there.

Radio is a CASH FLOW business. If you purchase fow a low price, keep expenses down, and know how to sell ads using ideas, you will make money every month.

You can make money in ANY market, small, large, tourist...does not matter. Keep expenses down and sell ideas and solutions.

Keep your eye out for some more Buffalo filings in the next few days at fcc today.com

All good stuff, and I can focus on Buffalo. Some other stations will not be so excited.

None of this "Mr.Shula" stuff Dave. I still wear cowboy boots

It's not a cash flow business if you have overwhelming debt. iHeart, Audacy, Salem, Cumulus, SBS, Beasley are among the examples of radio's current cash flow potential to be inadequate for debt service.

But there are some stations that just can't make money. FMs too far from any major business center, AM daytimers, horribly directional AM fulltimers and low power AMs with inadequate market coverage are among those that just can't be made profitable.

I expected as much.

Good for you. There are many of us wearing your "colors" and cheering on your opposition to current NAB policies while giving a good service to local businesses.

I suspected as much. I'm a "country cousin" who grew up in Ecuador but wear snap shirts! 🤠

WGAY is not a LGBTQ station. It's a CHR.
Just like my local, KGAY, is not a "gay station" but a sort of lifestyle Hot AC. Lots of rhythmic stuff, and plenty of ads by the many gay owned businesses (or gay welcoming ones) in the Palm Springs market.

I enjoy the station often, as it is far less rock and has a "beat and rhythm" that other stations lack. Very professionally done, too, for a small market.

Part of cash flow is not having debt. That’s what I meant by “expenses”.

I do feel any station, anywhere can make money. Again, low price and be creative selling what ever product you have on air
