Bulletin to watch: CBS-FM days from switching back to OLDIES!

R&R Update:

"The re-launched format will feature songs from the Beatles, Motown and the Beach Boys, and continuing through the late `80s, with songs from artists such as Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Earth Wind & Fire, Rod Stewart, the Bee Gees, Chicago, Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Frankie Valli, and John Mellencamp, among many others.

As for the air staff, Dan Taylor has been named as the station’s new morning show host (6:00-10:00 a.m.), along with contributors Mr. G (weather) and Al Meredith (news headlines). Bob Shannon also marks his return to the station as host of middays (10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.), and is joined on-air by market vet Broadway Bill Lee who will host afternoon drive (3:00-7:00 p.m.).

[EDIT]

Well, it appears as though this will be a "classic hits" style station with a playlist similar to that of WOGL (Philly) as everybody, well, mostly everybody here, suggested. Jack on HD2 shouldn't be a surprise since, despite the VERY LOW ratings, there is an audience for Jack.

Oh, this also got a mention on, of all places, CNBC in their CNBC.com Headlines portion, which included videos with the old WCBS FM 101.1 flag on the microphone!

It’s interesting to note that missing from the reconstituted WCBS-FM are much of the tenured air staff heard on the oldies station when it signed off on June 3, 2005: [...] middayer and 25-year New York radio staple Randy Davis
The airstaff they will start off with should be great. They've got the foundation down; the only thing that's left (as far as airstaff) is nights, overnights, and weekends. I'm sure they have some ideas. As far as Randy Davis, I don't know, but it seems he will be a long-term fill-in for Steve O'Brien at Adult Contemporary WMGQ New Brunswick.

Wonder what Joel Hollendar is thinking right about now...?

More than likely angry since they took out a couple of Free FMs (with more coming I would think), and the controversial Jack FM NYC. He, more than likely, is thinking to himself Why did I retire? if I knew this was going to happen I would have stayed!

Now, that's what I call making a statement! A mix of the old (Taylor & Shannon) and the new (Lee). All very recognizable names/voices in this market. I'm sure there will be more to follow. As I've said before, NY is a personality driven market and the return of these vets (and others) to the airwaves will instantly create the kind of buzz a re-launching of WCBS-FM will need to be successful. And the music mix may be palatable to even the most ardent of "Oldies" listener. I can't wait!

Motown will be a part of the new station, according to the press release, but keep in mind that THIS IS NOT going to be a 60's saturated CBS-FM. It's going to play music from the mid-60's to the late 80's... and THAT is the smart thing to do. As much as I enjoy the late 50's and early 60's, I've accepted that it's not coming back to CBS-FM, and I equally enjoy the music they describe in the press release. And I'm fine with that - some John Mellencamp and Bruce Springsteen from the 80's should sound great next to the Beatles, Beach Boys, Eagles, Donna Summer, and the like...

We're getting an "oldies" station back, and that's good enough for me!

Motown is going to be a MAJOR part of the station, as it appears. However, don't expect a 50s/60s-centric station since those days are all over but the cryin'. It needs to be a station of either 60s and 70s music, or 60s, 70s, and 80s to have the advertisers join the party. Therefore, it should be a very good station for have music from the 60s to appease the former CBS-FM listeners. And the playlist should be MORE than the limited playlist that Jack had. This is going to be very interesting when this starts this Thursday at an appropriate time of 1:01 PM. The airstaff seems appropriate since most of the others are either working at other stations, or (in the case of "Cousin" Brucie Morrow) on satellite radio. If there is a stunting in advance, that will be fun. I would definitely expect an opening statement from SOMEONE at CBS Radio. I can hear the We, at CBS Radio, would like to apologize to the entire New York area for taking away the greatest station on New York Radio, or something similar to that effect, now.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to happen, although it wouldn't be unprecedented. If you'll remember, when Imus returned to WNBC in 1979, there was a TV campaign with the new Station Manager (post Bob Pittman) publicly apologizing for firing him two years earlier.

We'll all let you have the last word, Eduardo.

My last word on this is to repeat my first words: there is little if any money in a market like New York for 55+. An occasional agency buy, perhaps... and some lower-rate direct buys. But not enough to sustain a major station.

And, now that we have seen the press release from CBS, we know that the format is going to be very similar to WOGL and will be classic hits, starting in the mid to late 60's and ending all the way into the 80's. That is a 35-54 appeal station, which hits buyers where the money is. It is not a 55+ oldies format, which is gradually losing whatever sales appeal it once had due to the older and less desirable demos.

Radio is a business, and it is all about the money. And it has been for over 80 years.

In other words...."Jack" with a different name. I still say, it will not work with an degree of numbers! After a Glass Tiger, Huey Lewis set airs, and you sweep into The Outsiders, Beach Boys, JJ Jackson, etc..that 35 year old house wife is gone!! And...the same in reverse. Radio does not work like it did 35 years ago anymore!

The Format is being called Oldies. The format you said would never return to the airwaves in NY, much less at 101.1. (Its actually not going to be much different than whats on WCBSFM.com/HD2 right now) You are not going to gain any correctness or credibility by modifying your former arrogant position or shading your words now. The final "mix" of music on the station will eventually be dictated by its listeners, not "consultants". They listened to the "consultants" over and over at CBS/Infinity. Each turn they (CBS/Infinity) took was wrong wrong wrong.

No vitreol, no venom here. Just common sense.

Then you will not have an oldies station in New York...period.

I can appreciate fans of the "traditional" oldies format. But, times have changed. A radio station cannot
survive with, basically, a 55 plus audience. Those are the facts. If you can't accept it, that's your problem.
I disagree with the agencies who say the boomers aren't a valued audience, but apparently, their minds are made up.

Gee..why don't you wait till the station comes on the air, before you all start ranting about what's not there?

You have no idea how much I'm enjoying reading these threads! LOL!

The bottom line is that this is all about the PPM, coming in 2 months to NY.

And, actually...though many of you oldies fanatics have excoriated David Eduardo on this board, he's right.

While Dan Mason is the guy whose bringing at least a "form" of CBS-FM back, you really have Arbitron's
PPM to thank.

The PPM is apparently catching listening in Pizza shops, cabs and other businesses who would rather play some type of "oldies" or "classic hits" station in their business, because it's non-controversial music that is more upbeat than the "sleepy" light rock stations. This is listening that went largely unnoticed because, under the "recall" method of ratings, a lot of younger people in their 30's and 40's might not have remembered they listened to an "oldies" station while at lunch, and recorded it in their diaries. With PPM, that "listening" now gets counted.

And as the PPM rolls out, and it is a slow roll out over 3 years for the first 50 markets, we can expect radio boradcasters to go through similar reasoning processes in other markets.

The Arbitron website has the roll out schedule, so we can all polish our tarot card reading skills or call Ms. Cleo and try to predict what will happen in each market. Ain't that what this board is for? ;D
