The Burlington-Plattsburgh, N.Y., region is getting its first 24-hour all-sports radio station, and local high school and college games will be included.

Beginning Monday, the national feed for ESPN Radio will be heard locally on AM 1390, a South Burlington station that is switching its call letters from WVAA to WCAT, according Rich De- Lancy, the market manager for Champlain Radio Group, which owns the station.

(am guessing as in CATamounts? UVM mascot...)


ESPN Radio has been available in the area on WTWK-AM (1070) in South Burlington, which is restricted to broadcasting only sunrise to sunset under its radio license from the Federal Communications Commission.

Air America, the talk show programming on WVAA, will move down the dial to WTWK, which also is owned by Champlain Radio. The programming will be trimmed to sunrise to sunset on the 5,000-watt station

Local play-by-play programming can be pretty lucrative. I worked at a small FM station once that aired local Div II college sports (never mind that we had an AM in the building - the 100,000 watt FM rocker commanded bigger bucks for college football, basketball and hockey).

I'm sure they found that there was the opportunity to rake in dough with local games. Of course, teams play mostly at night, so that prompted the switch. And right before the school year, too.
 
Yes--and had the VT Lake Monsters been available (they're on 960/96.7) they probably would have grabbed them, too (I think at one point the team which had been the VT Expos was on 1390, as it was, even if
shared with other stations)...They can't get Red Sox (WJOY) or Yanks (WVMT). But baseball playoffs
(and "Sunday night games", etc.) and other ESPN sports would certainly be heard on 1390.
 
Now the WCAT site is up and running...sports ticker at bottom. There's a logo for the VT Lake Monsters up top even though they're on WEAV 960/WXZO 96.7 (though I wonder if maybe they can push to carry games next year? the stick for 1390 is not all that far away from Centennial Field, btw)

When I clicked a link for Champlain Radio Group it mentioned how WUSX 93.7 was now #3 in Addison County
and "fastest growing station". I figured country/classic country would be good fit for that area.
