Business News Radio in the Burgh!

There are dayparts when KQV would have more listeners if they opened a window in Center City Tower and shouted to people below at the bus stop. I am not kidding, less than 400 in some cases. WURP never beat that on its best day and and wouldn't because only the radio geeks on this board would put up with that bad a signal.

Now that Imus is toast they have nothing to stand on. Its likely they won't be offered the replacements that CBS has already talked about internally because starting April 15th these shows actually have to start making money on their own.

We have to remember that 99.999999999999% of the people listening to radio listen for an entirely different reason than some/most of us do. They don't want the distraction of a bad signal or have to change frequencies the minute they exit the Squirrel Hill Tunnels. They want to set it and forget it. Heck a growing number won't even sit through a commerical anymore.

And that totally makes the case against all of these small AMs. There is virtually nothing they can put on the air at this point that would pull people away from FM, satellite, CD and MP3.

On the contrary. They simply have to put something on the air that is entertaining.

Wait, I forgot. Broadcast radio doesn't work that way anymore, does it? It's all about appealing to the lowest common denominator and taking the path of least resistance.

Never mind.

:( I guess 1550 WURP's flipped to biz. news. Leykis's gone, 7-12AM, replaced by a somewhat moronic yunzer sportstalker.

Haven't tuned in Pgh radio in 2-weeks since 93.7 went gay on me...

Any word if Leykis'll be picked up by anyone else? Maybe replace that poor attempt at 'local' sports (f/Cali -D Demecheck or someone...)??

Disagree wholeheartedly! The Sony Walkman was invented in 1978. We've had personal listening devices since then, including FM radio. Yet AM is still here.

But here is the big difference...AM can be successful if it is marketed and promoted properly and you give your listeners a solid, marketable product that they want to hear and that your sales force can sell. And you have to work HARD at it. You can't sit back and collect the paycheck. Nobody wants to work that hard anymore...it's too easy to program a cookie-cutter format concept and then sit back and wait for the phone to ring. Doesn't work that way.

I work for two very successful AM stations in Butler County. Easy listening and country. We are EVERYWHERE...remotes, events, you name it. The biggest reason behind our success is because we program our stations in response to our community. In fact, we were nominated for an NAB crystal award testifying to our efforts. Our owners are all local Butler County residents, and that's the way it's always been.

And...WE MAKE MONEY. You've got to spend it to make it back...and we do.
