Buying my new internet radio appliance today

I'm buying my internet radio appliance today!
C.Crane Company makes the one I'm buying - it costs a couple of hundred dollars but puts the world of streamed audio at my fingertips - no fumbling with messy computers and sticky keyboards......
Questions: How will the media groups get control of this new content delivery medium and destroy the potential of media access for the unwashed....and unlimited competition?
Content delivery......the ability to produce compelling entertainment......the new benchmark for success. How many have we seen successful at delivering innovation in this area? Who will be the next radio version of Uncle Walt Disney or Steven Spielberg?
When will you buy your "streaming audio appliance?" At what price would you be interested? How long until it's in every automobile?

In a few short weeks I have become addicted to listening to AOLRadio and Pandora on my iPhone. I just put a station on, throw the iPhone in my iPod speakers and I can either listen to any CBS radio station, or one of the themed channels(much like the XM or Sirius) or let Pandora create a station for me. I know all of this was already available on the internet but it never interested me. In the house it works great because it streams through wi-fi.

Now I am thinking about getting a new car radio that is iPod friendly so I can stream it through my car speakers. Of course provided the network works good enough but I think it should be fine in metro Atlanta.

Good idea, RTibbs. I've been using an FM modulator for my iPod for a couple of years but it doesn't always work out well and I usually have to crank the radio volume way up which made for interesting experiences when I first started. Imagine going from iPod at almost full volume to getting out of the car...than at the end of the day (or first thing in the morning for that matter) cranking up the car and switching to a different freq. That's a wake up. That aside, I've been meaning to get the ipod interface for my Alpine radio. NOt sure if I can still get it. Might be a christmas wish list item.

I think internet-radio in the car has great potential. As RTibbs said, he can listen that through his iPhone. Verizon, as I read recently, is involved with the LiMo project (open source OS for phones) and there are many organizations that are backing Android (another open source mobile OS). As that get more widespread, you're likely to start seeing more mobile apps, widgets for just that. It will be a question of cost for the consumer..unless the devices is wifi...then it could be a question of seeing how long before WiMax gets rolled out. I read 2009, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Have any AVR manufacturers release AVRs with media stream capabilites yet? Something with an ethernet or 802.11 connection would spark my interest.

At first I really liked Pandora, but I've come to realize it has a learning disability. No matter how many times I try to teach it what kind of music I want to hear it plays things over and over that I don't want to hear. It's a fun toy for a little while, but gets boring and annoying after an hour or so of fighting with it.
