Byron Allen of Allen Media Group named as candidate to get the Washington Commanders

Note this is in talks for now over Washington Post being sold in relation to Bezos being named as a candidate for the Washington Commanders.

Does Jeff Bezos love football more than he loves newspapers? That’s a question getting tossed around the nation’s capital as its NFL franchise hits the block.

Chatter is growing that Amazon’s billionaire founder is looking to clear the way for a purchase of the Washington Commanders by selling the Washington Post — with speculation boosted last month by leaked video of publisher Fred Ryan disclosing layoff plans at an unruly town hall meeting.

A family member was wondering if Bezos’ ownership stake in Amazon might be a conflict of interest with the Prime Video streaming deal, if he is also a team owner? Of course media companies have owned sports teams in the past.

The Washington Post says it's not for sale:

Statement from a Washington Post spokesperson: “The Post is not for sale.”

The article goes on to say that Bezos would sell the Post because the team's owner hates the paper and wouldn't sell the team to him if he owned it. It sounds very s peculative to me.

Snyder hates everyone. That won't stop him from taking the highest bid on the team.

This is an interesting story because it involves sports and broadcasting in that Josh Harris founded Apollo Global, owner of Cox Media. Of course Dan Snyder founded a media company too. And he totally destroyed a once-great franchise. The team has been a laughingstock for most of this century. They killed any credibility they ever had when they changed their name. The first job the new owners have is to give people a reason to root for this nameless, spineless, imageless team. They need to develop a brand. One that resonates the way that the old one did. One that would cause grown men with college educations to put on wigs, dresses, and hog noses and dance as the hogettes. That's when you know you have built a brand.

The problem with this new group is they're out of towners who really have no connection to the DC culture. So I don't know how they can rebuild a Washington institution when they don't live in the area. But maybe they can learn. Look...it can't get any worse.

The other side of this is Dan Snyder bought this team in 1999 for under a billion, and sold it for over $6 billion, so good for him.

And good riddance.
