Byron Allen rumored to be in talks to get Tribune Media

https://nypost.com/2018/11/08/byron-allen-seriously-interested-in-buying-tribune-media/

If you live in Los Angeles, Chicago or NYC where Tribune owns an outlet this rumored talk is at play here.

Byron Allen, the comedian turned media mogul, is in the hunt to buy Tribune Media, the 42-station TV network, which went on the block for a second time earlier this year.

Allen, who paid $300 million for the Weather Channel in April, owns LA-based Entertainment Studios, an independent movie production company, and has been on the prowl to expand his media footprint.

Three other bidders are also said to be in the hunt for the company, which includes WPIX in New York and WGN in Chicago.

It’s a second go-round on the auction block for Tribune Media, which thought it had a sale to conservative Sinclair Broadcast network — until that $3.9 billion deal was unexpectedly blocked by the Federal Communications Commission three months ago.

In the new round, my colleague Josh Kosman reported last month that Tribune Media was drawing interest from another conservative mogul, Tom Hicks Jr., the boss of private equity firm Hicks Equity Partners. Hicks also heads America First, a super PAC that’s aligned with President Trump.

Allen shelled out $300 million for the Weather Channel in April, and he’ll be up against three other bidders for Tribune. It’s the company’s second go-round on the auction block.

The FCC blocked Tribune’s sale to Sinclair Broadcasting three months ago in what was to be a $3.9 billion deal. The market cap for Tribune, which includes New York-based WPIX-TV and Chicago’s WGN, is at $3.4 billion.

Tom Hicks Jr., the head of private equity firm Hicks Equity Partners, and head of America First, a super PAC connected with President Trump, has submitted a joint bid for Tribune with Cerberus Capital. The Post reports that Allen’s rival bid has backing from Citigroup and Goldman Sachs.

Well I know one thing - he'll make 'Funny You Should Ask' a must-run on all those stations ;)

It's on 38 the Spot Funny You Should Ask. If he were to buy FOX4KC then Digital Sub Channels his company owns gone on FOX4KC.

I rather have him owning the stations than Sinclair. BTW, has he made any changes to The Weather Channel since he bought it? We have DIRECTV and The Weather Channel is in a higher package than the one we subscribe to. We get ACCU-WEATHER NETWORK with the packaged we subscribe to. It replaces Weather Nation. I like both ACCU-WEATHER and Weather Nation.

The main thing I've noticed is that the full local forecast is on only on at 18 and 48 minutes after the hour rather than every 10 minutes on the 8s now.

A lot of his shows are on Nexstar stations Wood TV, WOTV Comic Unlashed, WXSP and couple on WZZM. Guessing they would move to WXMI Fox17 if he wins the bid to buy Tribune once the contracts run out on said stations maybe would have to keep those shows on those stations?

I don't think he's well capitalized enough to make the buy. With Sinclair no longer in the hunt, I'm skeptical that the company gets acquired as a single entity. I think it's more likely that a bid is made where multiple buyers will walk away with pieces of the company. Tribune just announced buyouts to further reduce staff.
