California and Missouri Broadcasters Press FCC to Adopt All-Digital

It’s time for all-digital AM to come to fruition — with as little delay and with as simple a transition process as possible.

That’s the message from two more broadcasting associations that are calling on the Federal Communications Commission to allow a voluntary station-by-station transition to an all-digital mode of operation by AM band broadcast stations.

These comments were filed by the California and Missouri Broadcasters Associations. They urged the FCC to adopt the MA3 digital operation rules as promptly as possible. A number of other broadcast organizations and associations have filed their own separate comments, as we’ve been reporting.

The California and Missouri associations said they believe that this proceeding is especially important to small towns and diverse communities where local AM remains the most relevant source of local news and information.

Good for them! It's reassuring to see advocates actually trying something to resurrect the AM broadcast band, rather than old curmudgeons that either don't believe in change, or hayseed broadcast groups filing objections based on the failure of AM stereo.

^^^^^ Exactly. Give the stations the option. It's not like there aren't, or won't, be radios available to decode all HD on AM. And I think there will always be analog stations present as long as the band is active.

I suspect I know too little of the technical aspects of this topic, but in general I’m happy that AM stations are willing to try all-digital. If they’re willing, I feel like we ought to let them try. I have acquired HD radios (plural) purposefully within the past year-ish, and on balance i really like what it has to offer on a portable or tabletop radio, as well as in the car. I’ve heard it said that I live in a pretty healthy HD radio market. Maybe that is a big factor in why I like the idea.
