Caller Fesses Up To Poisoning Auburn Oak Trees On Paul Finebaum's Show

A caller identifying himself as "Al in Dadeville" called Paul Finebaum's radio show based at WJOX to take responsibility for the poisoning of live oak trees at Toomer's Corner at Auburn University. "Al" was believed to have used a herbicide on the trees on Thanksgiving weekend, following Auburn's comeback victory over Alabama on November 26.

When informed by Finebaum that his actions were against the law, "Al" replied, "Well you think I care? ... I really don't."

Clearly bleeding crimson, the caller then signed off with, "Roll damn Tide."

Wow. 62 years old. If you didn't hear the audio of the telephone call, you would immediately think that it was someone as young as a teenager, or no older than in his 30's, who committed this act.

62 years old. Good heavens. Either he's a die-hard 'Bama fan, or he has a major grudge against Auburn.

Is there audio of this conversation available anywhere?

I'm not a football fan (gasp) but I have been told that the AL/AU games were suspended for many years in the early part of the 20th Century over violence concerns. Maybe it's time to stop the Iron Bowl again for a while. Any fan who'd do something like that to a bunch of old historic trees because of a stupid football rivalry should probably be in a mental ward.

And radio was there! :D

As a die hard Alabama fan, I say his actions were terrible and tragic. There is no excuse for this and myself as well as all other fellow Alabama fans I know stand behind Auburn in support. Please don't associate this morons actions with the rest of us. It was totally out of line and uncalled for and I hope he is punished to the fullest extent of the law. Alabama isn't about that. We don't want him, so he can go ahead and root for someone else.

Actually, the Alabama-Auburn rivalry was suspended when in 1908 the two schools couldn't agree on the number of players each team could bring, the per diem, and where they were going to get the referee from. It had nothing to do with violence.

Huh, oh really? I had always heard it was about violence. Well, that certainly is less embarrassing an explanation. ;)

What a freaking idiot!!!
First to actually do the deed, then call in a sports talk radio show to admit to it.
That gives the term Alabama Redneck a whole new meaning around the country.
The Dadeville Dumbass.

According to Wikipedia…

"The series was suspended after the 1907 contest, due to violence and financial complications.[108] In 1944, Auburn suggested to reopen the series, though the Board of Trustees at Alabama rejected. However, the series was finally resumed in 1948"

I have always heard the violence in the stands story as the reason for the suspension of the series. The footnote references…

I lived in Alabama for quite a few years and was a fan of another SEC school but I really enjoyed those Iron Bowl rivalry games. I still have a tape somewhere of the game when Alabama played at Jordan-Hare for the first time.

I was always told the "Iron Bowl" football series between Auburn and Alabama was resumed due to an act of the Alabama State Legislature requiring the two teems to play yearly. The only concession given to the schools was that the game would be played on neutral turf, in Birmingham on Legion Field.
I can remember the first time they played in Auburn back around 1990 (I still have the program and ticket stub somewhere). There was talk that Alabama was not happy about playing in Jordan Hare and threatened to not show up for the game. I don't know if that was just trash talk by Auburn fans or if it was the truth...

All of us that know our herbicides have thought (or even dreamed) of killing off someone's pesky tree(s)... but we don't do it! Something is seriously wrong with "Al from Dadeville." Drunk Frat boys wouldn't have considered this! Maybe kill the turf on the field... but not a 130 year old oak.

I saw a story in which Al was supposedly attacked at a gas station somewhere. His family is trying to arrange he can move to Louisiana for his safety. I hope he's OK though.

Did he get beat up on Earth Day?
Clearly, that would be some kind of a nature revolt, and probably some poetic justice or something like that.
