Sometimes I wonder how we did it?

It is amazing how far we have come since those days in 1987.

I still had more fun on WIYQ than any other station I was on. I still think we had a great product, but we lost to the Stealth Contract.
 
Would that be Tor as in Tor Michaels? He had to be about 18 at the time.

That one hour at night when Ken simulcasted WTRN and IYQ was interesting too. You knew when it was comming from the WTRN studio because TRN had that one distinct warbly turntable. Anyone remember that?

> backtiming a true radio skill........always a high five when you back timed a cold ending song into the id...we used abc contemportary radio for years always backtiming to 54:30.......we had a BT category songs with long fades, al stewarts time passages some pablo cruise etc........england dan was a favorite...well a lost art form.....to those seemless net joins...let's raise a glass of stout.....

Suh. I trust you are not alluding to an insufficiency on my part in backtiming skills. For they were and are impeccable. (Often Dirk Van could not pick up his cue. But he was a drinker. No one knew. But. There. It is out.)
I now teach backtiming skills at a community college. My book "Backtiming to the 80s" is a cult best seller. It contains such word problems such as, "Duran Duran's latest hit is 3:45. Mutual news is at 1 p.m. It is now 12:56:48. Do you:
a) Play the song
b) Play a jingle then the song
c) Play the song and cut off the end.

The answer is, it's a trick question, you should skip the Duran Duran song and play an instrumental.

I trust you meant no ill of your accusation. I do not wish to demand satisfaction for this slight. Or else, you may find yourself on the business end of a rubber band at 10 paces. And I will make mention of my deadly accuracy, sir. Ask the poodle that dared bark through my lunchtime production session.

I remember when we phoned Mutual News (we meaning: Matt called and I laughed in the background) and told them we were starting a Dirk Van fan club and were calling to get information on Dirk. They were reticent to give out information on Dirk, so we said okay, how about C.D. Jaco?

WIYQ: Worst FM Ever?

It's a shock that any of you actually admit working there. For many, many, many years WIYQ was known as "The Last Undeveloped 50,000 watt FM in America." Radio people far and wide lusted to own it because they could all see what a damn gold mine it could be, but instead it was run like the rest of Cary Simpson's awful radio stations. Just horrible, in every regard. Will never forget the classic liner: "Why? Because we 'wike' you!" Still makes me cringe.

WIYQ was sold and a series of other broadcasters failed hard with it. Big companies and good companies have all tried to make it work and have failed I have seen the books for ALL of them. I can tell you that you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about as far as AMN stations being horrible. In every market that AMN has a station it serves the community and has survived and thrived or has been cut from the vine as WIYQ was cut, in some cases for over fifty years. That is unparalleled. 50,000 watts means nothing if you are short spaced and stuck with a poor signal that does not reach the people, and after others have dumped tens of thousands of dollars into it the signal is still substandard and does not reach any city with city grade coverage.

As I said any business that has been around and has truly served the communities it is in then it is a stunning success. You own ignorance is illustrated by the fact that you remember those liners, they have been off the air in any form for thirty or so years but it stuck in your head just as it stuck in the heads of everybody else. IYQ is just as dumb as the insurance gecko or the so simple caveman.

You start a new company then start it in ten other towns then do it for fifty years, that’s doing it well, even if it’s the son of the man saying so.

I'm very proud to have worked there. I was a high school kid and not a very good jock, but it was an amazing experience at a formative time of my life. I learned more there than you could imagine. It was hands-on, buddy, and we did it all. We helped build studios, fixed equipment, dug ditches, moved transmitters. We made that station sound pretty good.

If you saw a list of the good, successful radio people who started out working for Cary Simpson, you'd be amazed, but I wouldn't. My radio career wasn't especially distinguished, but it is a part of my life that I wouldn't change for anything. I owe it to WIYQ and Cary Simpson, and Ted Simpson, and Matt Swayne, and maybe, maybe, some of it to Harlow, just because if you ask him that's what he'll tell you. I don't have the proper words to express my gratitude and respect for Mr. Simpson for making such a large impact on my life.

I find it absolutely amazing how many people with no knowlege and understanding are quick to point the finger and call the Simpson family a big joke. I have known of them for years...have only known them personally for a short time since falling into their employ at G101 as a weekend talent / broadcast consultant for the Programming Department and I have to say you have NO IDEA the level of commitment this family puts into their stations.

G101 has a broadcast facility comparable with that of the major markets (although you would not know it from the outside since they did not spend big bucks on a Flashy New Building to showcase the real magic inside). They did a total digital upgrade on the transmitter end to ensure a high quality great sounding signal. When they made a decision to drop the Revolution handle in favor of G101, Ted and the Simpson Gang said we want to find THE BEST Imaging guy we can get to do the job and let's get him on the air. They hired Mitch Craig who does not come cheaply...but sounds Superb...I point out that at the same time, their primary competitor is doing their imaging IN HOUSE. The Simpsons did not need to make this type of investment...they chose to because they care about the quality of the product.

They have staffers who have been with them for YEARS while many of the other stations nearby see people come in and out of the revolving door constantly! Ask the staff what they think of the place they work and you will see a smile on EVRYONE'S FACE as the proudly tell you they love it here!

They have excellent relations with many of the area charities and organizations and are committed to being part of the communities they serve.

While most of the other owners have sold 2, 3 even more times the Simpsons have held strong in most of their markets, only selling off a few assets here and there and those tended to be ones that they would be wise to sell off. People have made offers on WGMR and the family holds their ground and says NO time and time again.

WIYQ....I remember it well...I remember I could NEVER get a strong signal no matter what...in fact at that time, Q-94's signal came in only slightly better than IYQ and that is not saying much as it was pretty bad too. I'd say they were smart to sell it off all those years ago and put money into their other assets instead. Don't underestimate these folks...they have been around A LONG TIME and they intend to keep it that way!!! I for one plan on being around to help them do it, as is McCall (who is back), AJ and all the rest of their team players.

I'm sure the Simpson family, a well-known and good family doesn't need defending. Because of their long-term commttment as business people, they'll do what they do as best as they know how and keep doing it until they don't want to do it anymore.

I think we should send Keystonejock a Christmas card! Maybe he wasn't hugged
enough as a child. Thank you Cary and Ted for everything that you have done
for me and for the industry. I was one of the thousands who started at an
AMN station, WIYQ in fact! I learned, and was given the opportunity to learn
as much as I could learn. After moving on and working for some bigger
broadcasters, for most of my career, I came back to AMN, because there was much
more that I needed to learn. I still receive the best advice I have ever
received from Cary. I can always count on him to put things into perspective.
So send Keystonejock a Christmas card this July, and tell him to go to the
top of the mountain and yell at his own Dad!@#$$&*&

I've lurked here unregstered for a few years. But this post made me gag.

Hmm. Letsee what I learned from the AMN:

"Don't stay here out of your loyalty to W***" (Cary Simpson)

All these lionizing comments about Cary & the AMN are so sweet & heartwarming I could puke. I rarely saw Cary when I worked for one of his shoestring-budget stations. He never had a clue what went on there anyway except for what he could dig out of any rumormill or from other second-handed information.

I have personally heard him talk to other co-workers & tell them libelous comments about me that were first of all uninformed as well as unfounded.

Yeah, I got to stretch my wings while I was at the AMN, but that's all I gained from it. I'm sure Cary is a wonderful person if you don't have to work for him. Otherwise, my experience with him has been nothing but a back-stabbing, cheapscape who pits one employee against another for his own personal gain.

And don't be trying to explain away my experience by saying I "need a hug" or that there's some kind of grudge match going on. Every other station I've worked for I've had great relations with, both co-workers and management...and that includes the one I'm at now. And this one actually has a health plan that I can actually USE!

Even the local businesses who saw how his stations ran a high school sporting event was EMBARRASSED at the crap the crew had to lug to the games & then try to use bread ties (so to speak) to make the stuff work. One business even offered to BUY decent gear for the sports team. How pathetic.

I wouldn't call WIYQ the "worst FM ever", but I would call the management in the "Almost Nothing Network" pretty primative at best...and in some cases, illegal at worst. Thank GOD I'm outta that hellhole.

What is wrong with that? That is a solid piece of advice.

So you rarely saw him but somehow you know that he was a clueless rumor monger that badmouthed you? By the way libel is written, the word you are looking for is slanderous.

Nobody goes to work for that organization expecting to get rich. America is a great place. Everybody is free to seek better employment if they do not like their situation. How long did you whine about your job before you got out? Why did you take the job to begin with?
