Wondering if my car radio is playing tricks on me or if AM 860 is putting out some signal on 840. On the Pennyrile Parkway, a few miles south of Hwy 425, WHAS has the local 860's audio mixed with it. That seems far enough away from the AM 860 site that my radio shouldn't have been swamped. This was mid-day...
I looked up their site on Com Study. It's been a long time since I've been to the site. There are two roads that go to Owensboro from 41. One is Western Audubon Parkway and the other is Hwy 60. It's been so long since I have driven, let alone THAT drive.
I used to be able to hear WHAS in Henderson. The WSON site is East of Henderson slightly, just South of Hwy 60. there was an old EAS, no, EBS, sorry, receiver at WGBF from the 50's that had WHAS marked on the dial.
The site is really cool as far as sites are concerned. It is on stilts out in an area that sometimes floods. The gen set and all re up in the air to prevent flooding. Good conductivity.
I am not sure of your exact location. WSON is about as far South of the Ohio as downtown Evansville (Lloyd Expressway) is North. Depending on exactly where you were North South. The Pennyrile starts in Henderson. The 425 exit on google maps shows that at that location you would be 4 miles and South of WSON's site (and West).
Normally I can zoom to even look at antennas on towers on google maps (not downloaded google earth) but there are no high quality photos of kentucky apparently.
I would think that at that distance WHAS should have been a boomer.
I can tell you this, WHAS's iBuzz is noticeable over WSON in Owensboro. As far as WSON's site located south of US 60, there is a railroad track that runs along the edge of the tower farm. I've often wondered if the ground system is tied to a rail.
I'm not south of Evansville, but here in Owensboro I can usually get WHAS during the day better than I can get WSON, at least here in the house on my "good" stereo.

OK... Let’s shift directions across "difficult terrain" to the SouthEast... I heard WHAS all the way down I-75 to the KY/TN border... It died at Jelico Mountain just south of the TN border. My new Pontiac has an AWESOME AM RADIO. Wanna hear more “AM Stories” from the new Pontiac [and Delphi]? ...’Just ask... SIX EQ settings, and some actually work to boot BTY, Bob - 1580 WIFE SOUNDS AWESOME on my new car radio... It was "present" all the way to the Hebron [CVG] exit on the beltway in N KY... HO-YAA-COOL!!! YEZ-SIR! GOOD JOB ENGINEER!
