Back a few years ago I read that a company in Ill tried to sell their old AM station while keeping their new expanded band AM station ( which they got because of the old station ) and that the FCC said they could not do so and must always sell the two together because one begot the other. Does anyone know if that is still the case?

Can you sell an expanded band station without selling the original station with it?

Wow, I forgot all about expanded band.
Yes it's true. The expanded and non-expanded band station(s) are considered one license. The original licensee's were supposed to give up one or the other at some point, but that deadline kept getting pushed off.

I thought the intent of the x-band loaner channel was to let stations simulcast on the two channels, then decide if it was worth changing. The idea was, to get many stations to move off the existing, crowded (and often low power) channels.
Seems like the requirement was, they would duplicate their programming, and keep the same call letters for both stations.
One SLC station apparently used the "free channel" to LMA a Mexican-format station, complete with different call letters, and did that for decades.

Stations were supposed to be required to give up one or the other five years after the expanded band station was licensed but that was decades ago! We had one such station and I believe it was the second expanded band station licensed. They gave up the license of the original station after five years, as directed and 1290 is permanently gone from the radio dial in Portland OR.
WDDD 810 Marion, IL got 1690 but never put it on the air down there, moved it up to the Chicago market leased it on to WVON and the 810 was deleted a few years ago

After the expanded band build at Chicago they attempted to sell the original station at Marion and were refused. A friend of mine claims that decision was overthrown later and he says you can now sell them separately but I can't find any reference to it anywhere which is why I posted the question. If anyone knows anything else please post and thanks. This is why Radio Discussions is such a great resource.

1690 in Chicago was Real Oldies 1690 for a couple of years, with Larry Lujack and Tommy Edwards in the morning.
