Can You Sell - Win the Job of a Lifetime!

The below link clearly demostrates that radio has now become a parody of itself. Click the link and see what Citadel has gone to in order to try to recruit salespeople. I feel very badly for the obvious staffers who were forced into this film. This lame, bad acting and juvenile video demonstrates what radio has become. I hold all participants in the video harmless, I am sure it wasn't their idea. Young people today DO NOT wish to work in radio sales and here's why:

1) 100% commission
2) No training
3) No laptop
4) No cellphone
5) No salary
6) No car allowance or gas

There are thousands of qualifed radio sellers available who have been fired from other companies for making too much money. Why not just hire them? Oh I forgot you would have to pay them.

It's my understanding that Citadel has now gone to hiring "independant contractors" so they don't even have to pay benefits, social security, etc.

Click the link soon, before the contest is over.

I wouldn't fault the video and acting. They're not actors and frankly I don't think the video is all that bad. I still wonder why you would have to "win" a job in radio sales. Maybe it'll be like that Rhode Show contest on Fox where even the losers got jobs at the station. But anyway, if you can't sell you're gone and if you make too much money selling you're gone. PRO-FM is a good sell but Hot106 has to be an uphill battle.

For someone who is unemployed and knows absolutely nothing about how radio and radio sales work this could look like a fun contest though. I notice it's powered by Newport Creamery so it's a creative way to get them on as a sponsor online and the losers can always try for jobs making sundaes.

I notice a clear EEOC violation with this new stunt. The recruitment page asks the applicant's birthday; month, day and year! I wonder if the HR department at Citadel signed off on this? This sets them up for an obvious age discrimination suit.

I agree and understand the message here but this is kinda ridiculous. You mean to tell me they dont have a draw full of resume's to to choose from.

This contest tells me they have no applicants. With this job market its sad that no is applying if thats the case.

Maybe they have a drawer full of applicants but seasoned sales professionals in any field know what questions to ask in a job interview and are not going to chance radio sales when they don't like the answers they get. You know what a lot of radio salespeople who are selling for the first time are like. They take the job with stars in their eyes. It's radio! It's show biz! It's fun! No! It sucks and very few really last. Those that do have contacts on the local level that enable them to keep their jobs. A contest like this will attract people still unemployed since they lost their sales jobs at Circuit City and there will be no promise of long term employment. If they want to do something like this then they should've run auditions for the night show instead of airing small market Ralphie. I'm sure they have a drawer full of applicants for on-air too.

Oh lord, what a joke. Obviously they're not trying to recruit anyone with any radio sales experience. I can't imagine any job, outside of elephant trainer, that I'd be willing to enter a contest to try to "win." Also, in order for a chance to "win" a job selling radio, you have to submit a headshot? to work in a cubicle? really?

Radio Sales is working in radio, just like a member of the janitorial staff who works for NASA. It sounds impressive and glamorous, but it isn't.

All those call girls on Craigslist will need jobs once the RI prostitution law gets signed. MAN can they SELL!!

No RI Prostitution law is going to be signed. Everything got stalled in the assembly. It's just not going to happen. Secondly.... your average escort can easily make $ 1,000 a night. They arn't going to rush into a career in Radio just to make $500 a week. This isn't the Job of a Lifetime. It's the Joke of a Lifetime!

Look they got this idea sponsered..so at least some money is coming in..but the stock is trading on the Over the Counter Market and is still at something hovering around ten cents a share..

This is maybe not the best way to find sales people...but are seasoned sales professionals banging down their doors to sell there? Not likely..so they had to try something..

Given the unemployment rate in RI these days, I'm sure they'll find plenty of takers..but what happens six months from now? How do you terminate a contest winner?

Actually, The funny thing about Rhode Island Labor laws is that a 16 year old somehow can't legally sell radio advertisements but she can sell her body as long as it's indoors and before 11:30 pm on a school night.

To the board Monitor...

Before you delete this post I am only making a joke.In Rhode Island a 16 year old can leagally prostitute as long as you dont take pictures, record the act and do your business before 11:30 pm. Yes,As sad as it is Rhode Island state law regulates Indoor Prostitution and it is legal.
That's why we are poking fun at it.

What do you mean a 16 year old can't sell Radio Advertisements. Why not? Isn't 16 the legal working age? I remember getting my first crappy job at McDonalds when I was 16. I lasted 1 whole night because I hated it that much!!! Then I tried Burger King. I seemed to like that better because I lasted 3 days there. Yeah... I don't like working in kitchens. But that's besides the point. Why can't a 16 year old work in Radio Sales?

If Steve Bianchi's on-air appeal last week for "interns" who could act as "Account Executives" was any indication, we may find out the answer to this one soon enough...one way or another! ;D
