CANADIAN RADIO NEWS FOR FEBRUARY, 2012

Yeziknoradio.....I have been trying to think of a case where someone has applied for a News-Talk specialty licence on FM and it's been rejected. Nothing stands out. All that comes to mind are CHMP and the Rogers FM's in Atlantic Canada, which of course were approved. Perhaps you can refresh my memory.

I think what you are saying, is that if no one actually applies, there is no available support for the idea that it would be rejected.

CFRB 1010 and AM 640 are not "Specialty" licences, but this might be, if it is granted:

...and they would most likely have to go all out to justify that they are not a direct threat to those other two AM talkers.

Furthermore, I note that if CFRB could go FM, it's only fair that AM 640 be granted the same token...but there's just no room on the FM dial in Toronto to grant that wish for both stations.

Has anyone ever tried Young Male oriented hot talk (Like CBS's old Free FM) in Canada?

Travis......Something similar to that branded as "Mojo Radio" was tried in both Toronto (on 640) and in Vancouver (on 730) back in 2002. Both experiments were total failures (barely a pulse in the ratings).

Yeziknoradio.....The "Touch 88.1" application is indeed for a specialty licence.

As far as I know nested repeaters are exempt from the specialty licence regulations. So someone like CFRB could get an FM repeater and keep their status quo, however if they ever decided to vacate 1010 and go FM only then a specialty licence would be required. Confusing and a lot of rigmarole.........

...and I'm honestly not too sure if Durham radio inc is an example or not. (or Corus, or Power broadcasting before that!)
I do recall the former 1350 having a very short life as a talk radio format, but I honestly do not recall if the 107.7 FM repeater (in Oshawa Ontario) was up and running during that time.
I think it only surfaced when the all oldies format came to be, so I can't drag that station in as an example, unfortunately.

From my understanding CKDO was already an oldies station when they got the FM repeater.

According to the timeline on the Canadian Communications Foundation site CKDO 1350 returned to an Oldies format in summer 2001. In March 2005 the nested repeater on 107.7 hit the air. In March 2006 CKDO AM moved from 1350 to 1580.
