Cannabis Ads May Find A Backdoor Onto Radio Via Limits By Congress On FCC Spending.

Inside Radio discusses new legislation that may allow cannabis advertising on the radio...

"Broadcasters have struggled with the dilemma of whether to accept advertising from the growing cannabis industry as laws changed state by state. Most companies have opted to reject such buys faced with the potential risk to their license as federal law continues to put marijuana in the same class of illegal drugs as heroin. But a rider tucked deep inside the proposed federal budget advancing in the House may change that. If passed, it would open the door to cannabis ads on radio and television."

Public radio stations that receive funding from the CPB (Corporation for Public Broadcasting) should run the idea of underwriting from Cannabis businesses by their legal counsel. CPB may not be permitted to fund a station that receives cannabis underwriting income.

Radio stations in the Springfield, Mass., area would be on a permanent high if the many dispensaries along the I-91 corridor from Springfield to Northampton were allowed to advertise on them. The Valley Advocate, the alternative weekly serving the region, contained hardly anything but marijuana ads for months, especially when the active local music scene was shut down by the pandemic in 2020 and the first half of 2021. Why print media can run these ads and radio can't is beyond my understanding. People from Vermont and Connecticut (both of which should have their first shops by December) have been going to Massachusetts for nearly four years for their pot and bringing it back home, over state lines, with no trouble at all, so if it is indeed illegal to transport across state lines, no one in those two states seems to care so long as you aren't using it while driving.

I'm sure, much to the sales-manager chagrin, that some organizations will not allow pot or CDB advertising, even if there is a waiver.
I know where I work, there's no way the company would allow pot or dispensary ads, even if they were the last advertisers on earth.

There will be none of that cannibas and mara--jawana in Tennessee. We are on the path of righteousness and not reefer madness hallelujah!

This is a funny story to me. It says House Democrats are including this as part of their 2023 draft budget proposal. Meanwhile, House Republicans are ALSO doing their draft 2023 budget, and they are including a provision that would ban the teaching of CRT in public schools and the military. The language is similar, not allowing federal funds to be used for the teaching of CRT. Of course, they don't have the votes to get their draft approved. But that shows where their priorities are, as the Democrats are thinking about CBD.

The reason I find it funny is that Congress hasn't actually passed a budget in a very long time. They typically do those "continuing resolutions," that basically continues to fund the existing budget with no new proposals. My anticipation is that's what will happen with this budget.
