Conservative radio in a liberal city

By Ben Popper

Few American cities have a reputation for progressive politics greater than Madison's, and yet five days a week, for hours at a time, thousands of people listen to conservative talk show hosts on WIBA, the market's No. 1 talk/news network.

So in the ostensibly liberal community of Madison and Dane County, where does such a large audience come from?

According to the most recent Arbitron ratings, Rush Limbaugh reaches an average of 8,900 Madison-area listeners between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on WIBA. That's more than WXXM-FM, "The MIC," Madison's affiliate for left-wing Air America, and WTDY, the next-largest news/talk network, put together.

During her 2-6 p.m. slot on WIBA, local conservative host Vicki McKenna pulls in an average of 4,300 listeners, which is about what The MIC and WTDY garner together during the same time. ...

AAR does need a ton of work on being far more entertaining and interesting (and less shouting and yelling in your ear for 3 hours).

But I also thought the article overstated the amount of prog/lib talk, and neglected some conservative talk on other radio stations in Madison.

Overstate Prog/Lib Talk

* WORT - Only for 1 hour in morning drive, 2 hours around lunch, and 2 hours in evening drive - is music variety much of the rest of the time.

* Public Radio - Questionnable how prog/lib this is? Weekends tend to be far less political than weekdays.

* WTDY - Now seems to consider itself more "moderate" vs. being prog/lib talk (like it considered itself 1-2 years ago).

Understate Conservative Talk

* WTDY has Bill O'Reilly (used to be mid-day, now in evening) and Fox News Live with Alan Colmes (moderate Democrat at best).

* WTMJ 620 AM - Mostly local conservative programming (when not airing sports).

* Four religious stations competing for conservative listeners in Madison as well (1190 AM, 1240 AM, 102.5 FM, 103.3 FM).
