Media musings: Camera-shy Glass brings 'Life' to television

... Yet, after years of hearing and rejecting other offers, Glass finally agreed to try a television version of "This American Life." The first of six episodes of the series premieres at 9:30 p.m. Thursday on Showtime, and longtime radio fans who may have been initially cool to the idea may find themselves ready to, as Glass' signature line puts it, "stay with us" on television as well as the radio.

"This American Life" collects first-person essays, mini radio documentaries, even short fiction pieces, with each episode loosely structured around a theme. They're sometimes funny, sometimes poignant, often surprising, and above all eschew the rules of traditional radio news or feature reporting for a more personal kind of storytelling.

This week's episode, for example, features several stories about the ups and downs of having a "mean friend." The show airs in Madison at 4 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays on WHA/AM 970 and W215AQ/FM 90.9.

But would that kind of personal storytelling, which exploits the intimate connection of radio so effectively, work on television? What would a radio show, using a medium that's possibly best experienced with your eyes closed, look like? ...
