Media musings: Forgot the song lyrics? You can find them on Yahoo!

We have no excuse now. We have to get the words right.

For music lovers, especially those that like to belt out the words along with the car radio, part of the fun of it is trying to figure out what the lyrics are, and sometimes botching them horribly. No matter how well you think you know your favorite band, somewhere in your brain right now is a lyric to one of their songs that the actual band would never dream of actually writing. ...

Web sites like KissThisGuy.com and AmIRight.com have a huge collection of these misheard lyrics (also known, apparently, as "mondegreens"). They're addictive reading, in part because you can't believe how off some of the misinterpretations are, in part because you're secretly glad that someone else in the world thought that line from "Rock the Casbah" was "For the mental retardation" instead of "Fundamentally, he can't take it."

A quick survey of the newsroom found that almost everybody had, or at least knew somebody who had, their own cherished misheard song lyrics.

The most popular entry by far is Manfred Mann's "Blinded by the Light," and the infamous lyric "Revved like a deuce, another runner in the night." Which makes only marginally more sense than the oft-misinterpreted version, "Wrapped up like a ******." "Excuse me while I kiss this guy" from "Purple Haze" came in second.
