Yeah, just who exactly IS he? Allegedly he's some pathological radio/TV/roadside geek somewhere in coastal Georgia. But that's just hearsay.

13 years ago, I had a 1981 Oldsmobile Omega (think Chevy Citation), and in the car's owners manual, I *think* it had all the FM radio stations in the U.S. listed. Anybody here ever see anything like that in their owner's manuals, or am I just dreaming that I saw this

No, you are not dreaming...my parents had a 1976 Olds Delta 88 and the owners manual had the listing...it had the listings in subcategories by city for all 50 states. And believe it or not, it was pretty accurate.

First off, the FCC never mandated FM reception on all radios. It was considered and lobbied for by the National Association for FM Broadcasters, but the band started to take off and the market demanded FM radio. Efforts were abandoned and the rest was history.

Back to the thread, there were many places to find radio listings. I've never seen a car manual with a listing for FM stations, but I'm sure somebody decided to add a section to a manual. Other radio listing memories include a fold out from AAA Triptik that included the major AM and FM stations across the US. The Zenith Trans-Oceanic included a list of FM stations. For years, the state map produced by the Commonwealth of Kentucky included a list of radio stations across the state.

Rand McNally maps in the '60s and early '70s used to have radio stations listed in a small inset box. Nothing more than call letters, frequency, city and a one-letter indication for network (or, as they called it, "chain") - N, C, A, M.

It wasn't every station in the state, just the 'major' ones in the largest cities.

I had a R-M road atlas from the mid-70s that had a page to that effect. Listed a handful of stations (all AM) in each state. Don't remember network affiliation being mentioned, but do recall a one-word format description...vague at best: "popular", "contemporary", "general". There may have been a few country stations listed too...don't remember & the map's long gone.

Just so happens the "GM AM/FM stereo radio listening manual" was 1 foot from the computer when I read this thread.
I saved it from a '78 Grand Prix.
8 pages of of FM radio school introductory info to help listeners understand why the FM would act different.
It shows pictorials of the RF envelope comparing AM/FM.
Then a 25 page list of FMs by state broken into 13 format types, followed by two pages comparing and contrasting
fixed antennas, power antennas, and windshield antennas.

You're not nuts, several car makers' manuals had radio station listings as part of their owner's manuals - especially during the mid 70's to early 80's. Olds did, certain Buicks did and my dad's Volvo did.

And, the radio station listings in maps were pretty cool - I have a number of old maps that have such listings on them. Some states (South Dakota comes to mind) had pretty intricate radio station listings on their "official" state highway maps right up to the 1980s. I think that this practice ended in the late 80's, when radio stations became more apt to change calls on a more frequent basis than before.

Somewhere I have a road map of Ontario, Canada, from the mid 1990s or so that includes province-wide lists of radio stations divided into AM and FM categories, and then subdivided into Anglophone and Francophone lists. No formats, just the cities, calls and frequencies - but that was still a help for me when I started DXing as a pre-teen. The list did become outdated very quickly because of the flood of Canadian AMs moving to FM at the time.

I had a similar Ontario map from the mid-70's.
And when I lived in Michigan in the mid-80's, there was
a widely circulated Radio Guide that was given away at
Marathon gas stations. That might be what the original
poster was remembering.

Freddy, the Radio Guide you're referring to was most likely one of those produced by Art Vuolo, "Radio's Best Friend." He still publishes them today and sells them via his website. They've been available from numerous different retailers/outlets through the years, including Elias Brothers Big Boy restaurants and Little Caesar's Pizza. The place where I found the most recent version was at the Visitor's Center in St. Ignace just after crossing the Mackinac Bridge. The website www.detroitradioflashbacks.net has scans of two of the old Radio Guides from 1985 and 1986.

I've also seen an old nationwide Rock Radio Guide published by WLS circa 1981 or so. It was organized by interstate highways and listed, IIRC, stations formatted as Top 40, Album Rock, Adult Contemporary and Urban/R&B. Naturally, WLS was the only station of any format listed for Chicago.
