Carla Rae back on radio, rejoins former partner Mike O'Brian on KKLZ

Carla Rae was very funny on the old HOT TALK 105.1 here in Las Vegas. She was the morning drive talker, able to hold her own, like Heidi Harris... The station was fun like KFI in L.A. Don & Mike held mid-days and were also a riot. 105.1 has been featuring Latin music since the demise of the Hot Talk format.

KXNT, KDWN and KMZQ all have the same stodgy, constipated attitude in their presentation. Since none of the three talk stations are exactly lighting the ratings on fire, why doesn't someone attempt to mimic the presentation of KFI? Much looser...much more fun. Hell they use Ratt's Round & Round to intro the newscast! It seems like a no brainer to me...

PS
Congrats to Carla Rae!!!

I agree with you DD... I listen to KFI alot in my car and on my cell phone when I can't pick it up over the air. Most of their air staff are on the edge. The hit the main news stories and then it is back to talk after traffic and weather. Our local (Las Vegas Talkers) all seem to copy one another and the paid broker programming causes me to hit the OFF button or listen out of the area on stations like KFI or KSL. On the weekends, there is NO TRAFFIC reporting on KDWN or KXNT during the back-to-back paid broker shows. I work weekends and need this info when freeways or main thoroughfares become parking lots.

I wonder what the ratings are for the non-stop paid programming on KXNT and KDWN on the weekends? I would guess around a 0.5 share. Who could sit through that. I realize it's easy money but still most of the high rated quality talk stations in the country wouldn't w*ore out the entire weekend.

The crazy thing is, KDWN and KXNT are out billing many of the commercial FM's. In fact, KDWN out billed the once great KWNR last month. I think KXNT did too. Probably due to the "w*oring" as you mentioned. AM News Talks will never get ratings in Vegas - no matter how well they are programmed. I wonder when people in this market will realize that we're not in New York, San Fran, or Chicago. News Talks are doing what they can to survive and that must include paid programming. That is the cold hard fact! Plus, I hear that these paid programming shows are really working for the clients purchasing the air time.

Everybody wins! Except the listeners.

Caroline Beasley, the Executive VP, Chief Financial Officer, Treasurer and Secretary of Beasley Broadcast group is quoted in this Weeks Radio World magazine. When asked if she is worried about the future of AM she replied (in part) "Yes, But {the Beasley stations} they're primarily brokered programming. That's low-cost, High-margin - type AM's." She goes on to be somewhat cautiously optomistic about the future of AM.
