Cat Country in Columbia-tell me about Miller Communications

@radioslick In my experience there are three formats where you can get away with puking jocks: urban, country, and christian contemporary. For whatever reason, those audiences are not put off by it.

I wouldn't say that Easter Sunday I heard the Jock on 92.5 the box say that he had a caller ask how in the F'ing Hell do they decide when Easter is, I would have had the good taste to at least reword the question a little better but I guess that some people just don't have good taste or just don't care even if it is a holiday like Easter. Needless to say I changed to another station and didn't wait for an answer and it will be a long long while before I listen to the box again.

Poor content is different from being a "puker." Puking is the artificial, exaggerated sing-songy way of speaking.

Thank you. I'm glad someone cleared up that terminology. Some of us were too embarrassed to admit we didn't understand the lingo of the day.

And it takes a lot to embarrass the GRC. ;D I thought maybe it had something to do with over dosing on Preparation-H.

GRC that was for Gatekeeper who seemed to be confused.

It always suprises me to turn on country radio or urban radio and still hear "deejays" puking everything out. On WLXC, you have a guy that still refers to himself as Doug Williams, the Quarterback of Radio, even though the Redskin player is long, long gone from the public attention. No slam against radio Doug, had the pleasure of working with him at DM and he's a decent, hard working soul. But man, what an outdated reference...

Ah yes, "puking." We could probably start a separate thread for that topic. But the practice is rampant on at least a couple of Columbia area radio stations, probably more.

It's actually hard to believe that the offenders, some of whom I know to be good people, don't aircheck themselves and then l-i-s-t-e-n to themselves or recognize the fact that the industry abandoned that type of presentation in favor of a more natural approach many, many years ago.

Columbia radio, for whatever reason, seems to be in a bubble, so maybe that explains(?) it.

I follow conversations in the forums for several geographies because I did radio in seven different states. I think you will find "bubbles" in a number of markets the size of Columbia and smaller.

I like the term we often use in corporate settins: "silos". Departments or divisions within a company develop their own (sometimes boneheaded stupid) culture and get disconnected from the real world.

thanks for the info denio, lol this board is a trip ! I'm sure after your sincere comment that Mr Miller is a good guy. I think I will continue to stay out of radio I have a good gig out of radio and like most markets big and small ( I have worked both) there isn't much future in radio. I'll enjoy my non radio gig and move on with life. Toasting you with a cold one by the beach !

Hey yall.
Somebody clear something up for me...
What exactly makes someone a "puker/pukemouth dj?"
I have seen that phrase on this forum a few times, and it always seemed to me like it was referring to motormouth-landspeed word spillers. I saw someone a while back call Jackson Armstrong and some staff from some station, maybe it was CKLW, "pukers" at one point.

But I never heard it referred to as "singsongy" before, or at least that never seemed to be implied.
Is there some kind of cadence, some kind of lilting of the phrases, or something to look out for? Some aircheck examples to check out?
I'm just wondering what's the description to be a "puker", since before this thread, I thought I got into and out of radio long after the age of the pukers. And in the distant future, when there's some reunion of the couple of stations I worked at for a short time, I don't want to misuse the phrase, just in case there are any puker dj's at the reunion who might get mad. :D

Puker? Think loud car dealer commercials, but trying to back announce a song and do a quick weather. Yelling or very loud, very unrelatable, in love with their own voice. Joe Jock. No one would talk to another person this way unless they were trying to talk over a very loud noise.

RE: Puking ... I always wanted to go to the fair, slip $20 to the Himalaya guy, and shout "Do Ya Wanna Go Faster?" in my best 70's AM Top 40 voice. Either that, or DJ at a strip club.

Then there are the cartoon characters of the airwaves. Columbia has its afternoon "Sylvester" the cat and morning "Foghorn Leghorn" jocks. Somewhere there is a "Mr. Magoo"............
