CBS 2 and KCAL 9 rebrand as "KCAL News".

What does that mean in today's context when all of the Paramount owned stations have their 24 hour local news operations from inside the CBS News App on their TV's. Channel 2 and Channel 9 has no meaning in this decade given that TV's made in this decade require Wifi signals.
btw the FCC is the regulator is tv towers and broadband infrastructure not content. the 5g and 4g mobile signals are used to be the old analog tv signals, that's a fact

It's just an acknowledgement of the on going failures of KCBS' local news. They have been unable to build an anchor desk around Pat Harvey on the evening news where it has been a revolving door at the co-anchor and chief meteorologist position.

Just dump the branding, combine the talent into one group and rebuild.

WCBS, WBBM, and KPIX have been at the bottom even as far back as the 90s just as FOX and indies that became WB and UPN are going beyond the 10pm/9c slot by extending their news operations to mornings 7-9am and beyond.

This is a move toward non-broadcast branding---for audiences who access the news product online, where channel numbers are irrelevant. It's why it's NBC Los Angeles instead of NBC4. But this takes the CBS brand out of the equation---and that's huge and a bit disorienting for those of us who've been around a while.
Yes I remember KNTV and WVIT were the the first among NBC Owned stations to deemphasize channel numbers. Like NBC Bay Area for San Jose and NBC Connecticut for Hartford-New Haven area.

I remember specifically with KNTV they had to rename themselves NBC Bay Area after they had issued over their channel number branding like "NBC3" but it was for Cable placement reasons and "NBC11" but that was because it was their OTA position. However, Specifically Solano County gets NBC on Channel 3 because at the time they got the OTA Signal from Sacramento's NBC Affiliate KCRA. That's what sparked them to relabel it as NBC Bay Area to cover both OTA, Cable initially and now streaming.

Channel 11 was once served Salinas and Monterey but it was an ABC station while sharing the San Jose market with KGO7, the 1999 timing of the breakup of the San Francisco Chronicle and KRON4 gave NBC an opportunity until Young Broadcasting overpaid for nearly a billion bucks just as Disney paid Granite to stop airing ABC on KNTV by July 2000. I know M/S/SC has 4 tv stations plus KQEH but neither Channels 35 or 67 never got a chance to get ABC despite a wide cable penetration until KSBW added a ABC subchannel on 8.2. Is it too small for a Monterey to handle more than 2 English stations, I know News-Press Gazette shut down KCOY's newsroom a few years ago leaving KEYT and KSBY serving SLC/SB/SM. Finally Channel 11 did barely reach either SF or Oakland when it joined NBC in 2002 since many other Bay Area stations transmit via the Sutro Tower, KNTV did move the tower from Loma Prieta Summit (between San Jose to Santa Cruz) to San Bruno Mountains.

What is crazy here is that there has been delays over the launch of CBS News Detroit for some time have been talking about launching Newscasts that is currently airing in San Francisco and Los Angeles for now.

Monterey-Salinas DMA is currently DMA 124 as of 2023.

My prediction is Tv news will likely be dead, or in critical condition by 2030. Yes there will be some holdouts, but most will get their news from other platforms.

when will Buzzfeed, Vice, Vox, etc. will die huh this year or next year? They now face the same old world problems as newspapers even without paying for it. We know Meta and Alphabet are not public service broadcasters even with live streaming means.

Evelyn Taft has been with Kcal forever it seems
But Pat Harvey has been with KCAL the longest ever since she was hired as the last KHJ-TV Anchor with the late Jerry Dunphy in 1989. This was when the station was getting to be rebranded and changing owners and management at the time it was released.

It’s not necessarily just that. All of the O&Os are adopting the “CBS (Name of City/Region)” branding convention. Even the few stations in the group that are legitimately in good positions like KCNC, WJZ and WCCO.

It’s 2023. The notion of branding by channel number feels as much of an antiquity as anything in the industry that has been kept afloat because no one thought to challenge matters. Even WJZY, a former Fox O&O in Charlotte, stripped “46” from their branding entirely and go by Queen City News / Fox Charlotte.

With the emergence of SVODs and OTTs, how do you stand out among a crowd of CBS 2s, NBC 4s, ABC 7s and Fox 5s? Try searching for “ABC 7” on Twitter, there is little to tell apart WABC from KABC or WLS. Same logo, Same name.

It’s not really crazy. WWJ’s effort has been delayed due to supply chain issues thanks to the pandemic.

Side note, Pat Harvey began her career at WWJ when it was originally WGPR 62. That station had a functional (if financially challenged) news department from day one in 1975 until 1992.

well location or fta channel surfing also there's .2 and above subchannels. Also WJZ, WBZ, and KDKA are only ones still sticking the Westinghouse heritage even after the CBS merger of 1995 at the time FOX took over the NFC conference.

What is “Westinghouse heritage”?

If it’s the dated proprietary font, only WOWO radio—a station Group W sold off in 1983–still uses it. I don’t count WJZ’s ghastly redrawn “13” and KPIX is already dropping it… WINS dropped the font when they added the FM simulcast. And honestly, does it need to stay? Do you want your station to look like it’s forever stuck in 1963?

If it’s the Eyewitness News name, only KYW still uses that, but it’ll be dropped for “CBS News Philadelphia”. Every other ex-Group W station dropped it at some point or another in the 2000s and 2010s. KYW didn’t even use the EWN name from 1991 to 1998!

If it’s “PM Magazine”, that went away in the early 90s; the last vestiges of Westinghouse being a local production hub went away after they bought CBS.

Which reminds me of one of my favorite Top Ten lists on the old Letterman show, when Westinghouse announced it was buying CBS:

Top Ten Suprising Facts About Michael H. Jordan, Chairman and CEO of Westinghouse - August 02, 1995

10. Has loved appliances ever since sitting on a vibrating washer as a teen
9. Bought CBS just to get close to Paula Zahn
8. Also sucks at baseball
7. That knob that makes toast lighter or darker? His idea
6. Frequently points below his belt and says, "You can be sure it's a Westinghouse!"
5. Was Potsie for six seasons on "Happy Days"
4. Once shot a G.E. repairman just to watch him die
3. His number one priority for CBS: bring back "Hee Haw"
2. Favorite pick-up line: Wanna defrost my pants?
1. The H. stands for Hootie

let's not forget CBS was desperate for 4 years without football until 1998. Yes it's a marketing driver to promote their shows but the damage is already done in Atlanta, Detroit, and Cleveland. Sure even if Milwaukee if yet to get a footing but this is all about money and marketing thanks to sports.

Local Tv news probably has another decade. But at some point there will be diminishing returns. By 2033 there may be some holdouts but my prediction is most will get their news from alternative venues. In fact, there may be new access from forms that haven’t even been developed. This is how fast tech is changing. The anchorman in the studio at 5, 6 and 11 is going to be gone by the end of the 20’s.
