I noticed that this morning, CBS 3 meteorologists are doing the forecasts on KYW-AM. According to someone, they are using the CBS 3 meteorologists for the weather, as well as Accu-Weather. Can anyone confirm this?
You are right. But there's no official comment from KYW or CBS3.imhomerjay said:If you heard it, what more confirmation is needed? :![]()

<shrugs> They've been doing this during Afternoon Drive for a while, haven't they? They've also used the TV traffic reporters (Bob Kelly?) during some Afternoon Drive segments.
Seems to me it's more of a cross-promotion to elevate the visibility of the TV news talent, especially since KYW-TV news still is behind WPVI-6ABC in the ratings. You tend to hear the KYW-3 staffers at times before the TV news goes on air.
Elsewhere on the thread there was talk about "branding" of weather on radio...the same thing happens at KYW for traffic, I believe -- technically, Metro Networks -- also owned by CBS -- provides the traffic reports for most Philly radio stations, I believe.
The "Shadow Traffic" brand is used on several of them - WHYY for sure. All the household names like John Butterworth, John Brown, and Rod Carson worked for Shadow Traffic and the KYW reports were branded that way too. A bunch of years ago KYW dropped the Shadow Traffic branding and simply calls it the "KYW News Radio Traffic Center".
It's all about which brands you want to promote...and why...and when.
For TV it's a different story, 'cause you want your weather talent to be in-studio even if the forecasts are produced by a third company. In radio you can't tell if the announcer is in the next studio, the next state, or the next country.

DanStrassberg said:Here in Boston, WBZ-TV (4) is now heavily advertising its "Accu-Weather" forecasts. I don't watch TV all that much, but AFAIK, WBZ-TV uses its own locally-based forecasters. I cannot remember ever seeing/hearing on Channel 4 any of the State College PA Accu-Weather forecasters that WBZ (AM-1030) carries throughout the day and evening. Another recent development, though, is co-owned WBZ (AM) running forecasts by the local WBZ-TV forecasters. I can't remember whether WBZ (AM) attaches the Accu-Weather name to the forecasts that are voiced by the local Channel 4 forecasters. They may be doing that--not sure.
All-in-all, it seems as though Accu-Weather has given up control of its own name and is allowing the use of its name in conjunction with content that Accu-Weather neither provides or develops. I wonder what compensation Accu-Weather has received (or is receiving) for allowing others to attach its name to their products. Can Accu-Weather be sure that third parties that it has allowed to use its name maintain Accu-Weather's quality standards? Or does Accu-Weather no longer care about the quality of product that airs under its name?

Sloppy facts on my part - you are right. Metro Networks was owned by Westwood One, which was *managed* (not owned) by CBS. Westwood One sold Metro Networks to Clear Channel this year, which also operates Total Traffic.
Westwood one has (had?) provided management services to CBS Radio activities that remain under CBS / Viacom ownership.
