CBS Corporation may buy KPHO-TV from Meredith Corporation and making it into second major english O&O in Phoenix some day in the future.

Sean McLaughlin may work with the network once again here in Phoenix.

Yes, in the year 2525 (if man is still alive).

And for extra credit--this is for Radioguy2006 only--who did it,
what year and what was its highest Billboard chart position? ;)

What is your source?

At one time, CBS did make an offer to purchase KPHO from Meredith (late '70's-early '80's?).
CBS offered low and Meredith wanted high.
Since Rupert took possession of KSAZ, I've wondered which network O&O would be next here in the Valley.
I think it's just a matter of time.

Was it that early? With a metro population of around 1.5 million at the time , I find it hard to believe that CBS would have wanted an O&O in a market as small as Phoenix was at the time. Also, I thought CBS was happy with KOOL-TV back then.

NBC: I'd be very surprised if Gannett sold Channel 12 to NBC or anyone else, unless the FCC forced them to due to newspaper-TV-ownership rules. In fact, I think they'd sell the Repulsive before KPNX. NBC already owns Telemundo Channel 39 and they want duopolies in major markets, but Gannett and NBC are happy campers together from what I understand. I won't hold my breath.

CBS: With KPHO being as successful as it is now, I think Meredith would want more money than CBS would be willing to pony up. CBS doesn't exactly do a bang-up job running the stations it has now (for example, WBBM-TV Chicago has been a trainwreck for years), so I think this would be a bad thing for Channel 5.

ABC: I think the only way Phoenix will get another network O&O will be if Disney buys out Belo and returns to KTVK. I doubt Belo wants to sell and I'm not sure Disney is in good enough financial shape to do that big a deal. Getting away from KNXV might make it worth while to them, however.

Any business is for sale for the right price, but I doubt any station will sell to one of the networks anytime soon.

that timeline doesn't seem right. In the late 70s and early 80s, the FCC limited one company to owning a maximum of 5 VHF television stations (plus an additional 2 UHFs, for a maximum of 7 total)...and CBS had it's limit with VHFs in NYC, LA, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh. In order to buy KPHO, they would have been forced to sell one of those other stations...and, as you note, Phoenix was a relatively small market at the time.

Slight correction to your post: The 5th CBS O&O before 1986 was St. Louis' KMOX-TV (now owned by Belo as KMOV-TV), not Pittsburgh. KDKA-TV was owned by Group W/Westinghouse (and Dumont before that) and didn't become a CBS O&O until the two companies merged and the Westinghouse name was retired.

Oops. You're absolutely right...sorry about the mistake. However, the basic point is unchanged...

If KTVK could realign itself with ABC, I'd rank it up there with CBS5 getting Dana and McLaughlin from 12 and MSNBC, respectively.
Who would've thunk it?
A coup of sorts and a definative change in Phoenix TV.
Since the suits from Belo stepped in, KTVK has been suffering.
The rights to Oprah aren't cheap. Lose Oprah and Phil isn't too far behind.
KTVK back to ABC?
On the same level, if John Hook were to join KNXV or KPNX...
Who's to say it can't happen?

KPHO has turned to a $$$ maker for Meredith. The same can be said, I believe for their shop in Atlanta, WGCL.
Everyone and every business has a price. Who's willing to match or beat it?

Sorry, he timed out.

Zaeger & Evans, numero uno in 1969.

Nurse Jeff and I dig the version of it by the Hollyridge Strings better! It's right up there with Atlantis by Donovon and Barry McGuire's Eve of Destruction in terms of all-time downers! We'd rather watch another Oreck infomercial than hear that song again
