CBS dumps 115: Sac station manager Hernandez and KCBS/KIFR's (ex-KFBK) Ken Kohl

Re: CBS dumps 115: Sac station manager Hernandez and KCBS/KIFR's (ex-KFBK) Ken K

Like I said ..when I worked at KFBK in the late eighties../early nineties..the ratings were double what they are now!!! HA!!! I've never met Ken Kohl.,..but I did work in the same trailer as Michael Hernandez at Ch. 31 KRBK/ He was always working on selling used cars..not news. So maybe he had a passion for sales. He did hire my replacement at that station..a doe-eyed beauty whose name I don't recall. She was best known for asking in the newsroom..." How do you spell INTENT...with one "e" or two?"".. nuff said.

Would that doe eyed beauty be SHARON ITO? I know she worked there with JOHN MALOS.

KidParrot's story is 100% accurate. And the saddest part of that tale is that that incident doesn't even crack the Top 10 list of the most dispicable things Ken Kohl did during his reign at KFBK and KSTE.

I personally saw that man lie right to his employees' faces over and over. I heard him talk openly about staffers he wanted to fire. I heard him regale people with personal details about coworkers' lives, including medical and other personal issues that they definitely wouldn't want their boss retelling. There was no end to the string of inappropriate and borderline actionable comments that came out of Kohl's mouth.

I saw his horrendous people skills chase away experienced vets who couldn't take it anymore and talented youngsters who deserved better. Rather than nurturing or instructing young reporters and editors, they were routinely subjected to withering rants about adhering to his personal "news philosophy" (triangle of killer content, anyone?) and nasty threats he'd "send you back" to your small-market past if you didn't do it his way IMMEDIATELY.

I know for a fact that he would call other news directors in an effort to torpedo a reporter's escape. He treated his staff with zero respect and took every opportunity to suck up every ounce of credit for the station's successes, while pinning all of its problems on any number of convenient scapegoats.

Corporate cost-cutting did considerable damage to KFBK, but nothing like the damage done by that man. Thankfully, I never ended up in Kohl's personal crosshairs, but for someone who's seen their far share of the sometimes ugly side of this business, even I was shocked by the self-satisfaction and glee Kohl took in berating and demoralizing the people under him.

To everybody who doesn't have a Ken Kohl horror story, trust me...it's just because you didn't know him well enough.

Welcome to the wonderful world of radio where pimps and whores run rampant and good people are eaten by the radio thugs.

no it wasn't Sharon Ito... Sharon is a mart woman, who no doubt knows how to spell "intent" ...I don't remember the other anchor's name..but she was very, very pretty.

What's a mart woman?
Someone who shops at K-Mart, Savemart, Wal-Mart?
I can't see Ito at any one of those places.

Hi Christine,

Not to make this thread into "Guess The Replacement," but would it happen to be Karen King? She was young, yes, and very pretty, but I would never take her for an airheaded bimbo by any stretch. But it's probably not her you're talking about...

Thanks

Where Is ANDY ASHER?

Christine, Did you work alongside ANDY ASHER? I know he worked as an Anchorman at then KRBK TV 31. I believe also worked at KTXL TV 40. Does anyone know the whereabouts of ANDY ASHER?

Andy Asher was a reporter on KFBK as of last year or so. Don't know if he's still there or not. I liked working with Andy because he alway brought in citrus fruit to work, and it would smell like oranges in the building when he was there. Plus, he's a nice guy.

Re: CBS dumps 115: Sac station manager Hernandez and KCBS/KIFR's (ex-KFBK) Ken K

Heck I didn't even know Andy was at BK???shows you how disconnected I am from most things local...I did see Andy in the pool where I swim..but it must have been a year ago at least. We did co-anchor the news at what was then KRBK..and yes He's a very nice guy!!!..and I think the very pretty woman's name was Karen King and she did indeed ask people in her newsroom ...how to spell "intent"...with one "e" or two..I think that says something about inate intelligence...perhaps dyslexic..Sharon Ito is SMART!!!not mart..

Hi Christine, Just want to let you know how I followed your career when you first came to Sacramento. I had heard about your case against KMBC in Kansas City. I remember when you first started at KRBK Channel 31 and I DIDN'T think you were too old or unattractive for TV. In fact I had the biggest crush on you. :) I read a lot of stories on your career in Salinas (KSBW) as well as Kansa City as well as your numerous radio stints but I haven't heard much about your KRBK Channel 31 years. How long did you end up working over there? Was it a positive period of your life there? Did you leave there on a good note? Was KOPLAR COMMUNICATIONS a good company to work with? Also if I recall, Didn't KCRA Channel 3 interviewed you on one of their Morning Talk Shows about your lawsuit against Metromedia around 1983 or 1984? I think the show was called LOOK WHO'S TALKING with Jim Finnerty and Margaret Pelley?

Re: CBS dumps 115: Sac station manager Hernandez and KCBS/KIFR's (ex-KFBK) Ken K

hey madman..I did lots of those "People are talking" type shows all over the country..but I don't remember meeting Margaret until many years later..Memory banks full as geezerhood held at bay by distance swiimming....cheers.cc

I believe it was Sue Peterson that was on the show. I was in the audience on the show once.

I worked under Kohl for a while shortly before he headed to S.F.....he was the reason I quit radio. It's bad enough not to make any money without being expected to do 6 people's jobs and having to be continually told you're not getting them done. I didn't see him fire anyone, but he sure threatened it enough times. So I walked out and never looked back.

There's only one guy in Sacramento radio I know of who was worse to work for, and he was in Public Radio....at least Kohl wasn't a stumbling moron who didn't use the restroom without getting the President's written O.K.first.

Close, Stage5...

It was Sue Pearson, who became Sue Pearson-Atkinson after marrying Richard.

Yeah, her.
Actually the KCRA show debuted in 1982 as FINNERTY AND COMPANY with Jim Finnerty and Margaret Pelley as the hosts. A couple years later, Margaret Pelley was promoted to Co-Anchor alongside Stan Atkinson on the News so Sue Pearson was brought in to replace Margaret and it was renamed LOOK WHO'S TALKING. KCRA pulled the plug on the show in 1985.
