CBS-FM Airing Giants Preseason Games, Too!

Seltzer said:
IF I were Clear Channel, I'd go after the Jets and put them on K Rock. Too late for this season but next time negotiations are up, I'd approach the Jets. They'll still get the char on ESPN w/o 1050 running the games.

Last I looked, CC never owned K-Rock, nor the frequency it was on, 92.3. If CC bought the Jets' rights, the only station it would fit on IMHO would be classic rock Q-104.3.

The Jets' deal with 1050 has at least this season and next season still to go. :)

This was posted on WCBS-FM's home page yesterday the 11th:

This Monday night, the home of New York’s Greatest hits becomes the place to hear New York’s Greatest “hits”. New York Giant’s Preseason kicks off on 101.1 CBS-FM as the Giants take on the Jets at the new Meadowland’s Stadium…

Catch all the action starting at 5:35PM on WCBS 101.1 FM…

So much for them putting it where it belongs on 92.3 NOW. Putting this on the #2 FM station in NYC, such a mistake.

5:35 PM? A meaningless (okay, the first football game to be played at the new stadium, more or less) game is worthy of a two-and-a-half-hour pregame show? (The official kickoff for this game is scheduled for 8 PM.)

It's days like this that WFAN should be inclined to move the Mets game scheduled for that day (a road start at Houston which is also scheduled to start at 8 PM Eastern) and carry the full Giants broadcast. Sure, it's a "meaningless" football game, as it doesn't count for anything in the standings... but this is a historic day in the era of New Meadowlands Stadium. And yes, I understand that the Mets have first dibs on WFAN, but for them to carry what will ultimately be yet another meaningless baseball game (can you believe their GM is going to be back next year?), they are completely dropping the ball on this one.

Forget about Jets games wanting to be heard on FM. I would not be surprised if the Giants broke their tradition with the blowtorch WFAN after their current contract is up and brings their business to Clear Channel. There is no reason why the Giants should stand for continuing to play second-fiddle to the Mets, who are traditionally out of playoff contention by the time football season starts.

And the fact that there are very few Mets/Giants fans out there.

The only CC station that would have the Giants or the Jets would be classic rock Q-104.3. There is no way the games would land on Z-100, 'KTU, Power or Lite. Classic rock is the only format that would fit the games.

CBS-FM listeners are going to be outraged that their music will once again be interrupted by football through the end of the end of the Mets' season. CBS-FM may be the #2 rated station in the market, but their ad revenue is low compared to other top-rated music stations.

How did the rumor start that the conflict football games would be on 92.3 FM? :)

I believe it was a CBS "insider" that had started that rumor in this thread...

I don't know why wcbsfm  they have other cbs stations to do it.

now for Sirius on Monday nights I miss my favorite DJ's :'(

But they all either have their hands full (Mets on WFAN; is there a Yankees game on WCBS-AM that night?) or their format doesn't gel well with football play-by-play... as we apparently found out with 92.3 Now.

CHR on 92.3 and AC on 102.7 lean heavily female and neither mixes with football pxp. Yankees are on 880, Mets are on 660 and 1010 doesn't take any sports. 101.1 was the only place the Giants' games could go until the Mets' season ends.

The Mets and Giants rights are owned by CBS Radio, with the Mets having first priority on WFAN. Giants games can only be transferred to another CBS station. The Devils and Nets buy their airtime on WFAN, so they can transfer conflict games elsewhere. :)

Okay... so here is why CBS is choosing CBS-FM to air Giants football games on: Not only is 92.3 Now younger skewing, there is a viable alternative in Z100 that I wouldn't think CBS would gamble their audience away, and risk potentially losing them to Z100. Same with Fresh 102.7, competing with Lite FM - but we won't expect football games airing on that incarnation of 102.7 anytime soon.

Consider no other station in the market is doing the kind of format that CBS-FM is, and coupled with the above, that explains why CBS-FM is a viable option to clear Giants games. I realize that this may still be hard to comprehend, as this thread is approaching its one-year anniversary tomorrow... but CBS-FM figures to lose the least listeners of CBS' FM stations by airing Giants games, or any sports play-by-play in general - and even if they did, given their very high cume, it would be peanuts compared to the number of potential listeners of Now or Fresh finding their competitors down the dial and sticking with them.

But this brings me right back to the Giants' radio situation. To remain aligned with one of the top billing radio stations in the country in WFAN is a good thing - but at what cost, when you find yourself playing second fiddle to the Mets, who will likely be going through the motions in playing out the rest of yet another unsuccessful baseball season, while the Giants embark on another football campaign, and the start of their existence in their new stadium. Last year, the Giants started the year with a 5-0 record. And I think only two of those games were heard on WFAN, due to Mets games airing at the same time. The Giants play (at least) 16 games in a given season, while the Mets play (at most) 162 games per year. Perhaps the time is right for the Giants to move on and find another station for their radio broadcasts. But where? If they went to Clear Channel, as previously explained, the most likely of the stations in that cluster to air the games would be Q104.3. At this moment, not a single sports broadcast contract is involved with any of the five Clear Channel-owned FM stations, so that should basically guarantee all Giants games being aired on Q104.3. Another possibility could be WOR, which already carries Rutgers football broadcasts. Maybe even WABC - that would mean the return of football to that signal after Jets games started airing exclusively on WEPN not too long ago. Out of all of the stations on the dial, these would be the most likely options for a new radio flagship for the New York Football Giants. While there are a few exceptions, traditionally, a news/talk or rock station serves as the radio affiliate for football play-by-play (as well as country, but of course, there's none of that here). With that said, I overlooked WRXP, for the reason that nobody knows if that station will even exist two years from now (and if, as strongly rumored, it becomes the new local radio home of "ESPN New York," it will end up Jets territory, anyway). Not to mention WABC, WOR and Q104.3 are largely stable in the New York radio market. And I wouldn't think the Giants would align themselves with a clunker - especially if they were planning on leaving WFAN. Of course, we don't even know that for sure. Maybe they like the fact that their games that conflict with Mets broadcasts are heard on the top-rated CBS-FM. I don't know. This is all just speculation, at this point. We'll see what happens when the Giants' radio contract with CBS is up.

All fair points, but I'd like to add a few. WOR was the Giants' flag from 1993-96. The deal was originally to be for five years through 1997. WOR lost money on the deal and sold the rights to WFAN in 1996. No way do the Giants move back to WOR. WABC? Forget it! They opted out of the Jets' simulcast last year. WEPN? That's Jets country and the Giants would not deal with a station that half the NY market currently cannot receive, while hoping they move to a major FM. Q-104.3 would be the only viable alternative if the Giants are looking to leave WFAN and IMHO, that's a big 'if'. :)

I had a feeling they would take the rumor back
it must be better of WCBSFM listeners having bad feedback than risking losing NowFM as NowFM is trying to make Z100 go off the air

Not sure if they could do this, but couldn't 1010 WINS been an alternative? I don't think they carry any sports.

The least thing CBS or the announcers of the game could do is acknowledge that the Jets are playing too, then maybe a few people more would tune in ;D

The Jets have their own station, 1050 ESPN, if you can receive it! They'll acknowledge the Jets all you want! :)
