CBS-FM Airing Giants Preseason Games, Too!

Devin Smith said:
i just read at wfan.com that this Saturday night The Giants game is gonna be put on WCBSAM

You mean you just read at http://newyork.cbslocal.com that WCBS-AM will be carrying the next Giants preseason game. ::)

Actually, I couldn't find anything online regarding WCBS-AM carrying Saturday night's Giants game. It will be shown on WCBS-TV on Saturday night.

If you click on WFAN and you go to their On Air Schedule and scroll down to Saturday you will find it

The Yankees are scheduled for 1:05 PM Sat 8/21 so it's possible. It just doesn't make sense WCBS-AM would interrupt news twice in one day for sports programming.

The Giants-Steelers game will be televised on WNBC-4. :)

Weekends, especially over the summer, are usually slow news periods. Listeners interested in the news can go to WINS which boasts they are New York's only all-news station. Likely WCBS-AM pulls in more advetising dollars airing a pre-season football game.

CBS always makes sure that one news station in NY is not encumbered with sports coverage. WINS has not had sports on its airwaves since they had the Yankees from 1978-80.

Before WFAN was launched, WCBS-AM as a news station broadcast Monday Night Football, the NFL Playoffs and Super Bowl, the MLB Playoffs and World Series, St John's men's b-ball, and had the Jets twice, 1979-83 then 1988-92.

Before WCBS-AM was a news station, they broadcast the Yankees from 1961-66. The Yankees returned to 880 in 2002. WCBS-AM was the football Giants' flagship from 1958-60, so this weekend's pre-season game is a homecoming of sorts. :)

I doubt the preseason games would be worth anything if placed on HD-2 channels that few have access to. It's much easier (or less complicated, whichever you prefer) to simply relegate the music programming to the Internet for the duration of the game. For reasons why the Giants are not on Now or Fresh, the answer is somewhere on the previous two pages of this thread, Ken. ;)

But look on the bright side - think of how much money they save on royalties of the songs that they play behind many of their news reports while they are airing sports play-by-play! ::)

I noticed tonight WCBS's RDS and HD display showed song titles of songs that weren't playing on the air during the game.

CBS has done this a lot over the years. In Philly, World Series games have been on WOGL-FM, and this past season the 76er's were often on when the sports scene was loaded up.
