CBS isn't showing the Tournament of Roses Parade

I've just seen on TitanTV.com that CBS will not be
showing the Tournament of Roses Parade this year,
the first time I can recall that happening. They'll
have "The Price Is Right" at 11 AM (ET), the affiliates
will get 12-1, then the Gator Bowl is on at 1 (ET).

Of course, I never understood why it was on so
many networks; it makes the most sense for ABC
to have it since it has the Rose Bowl.

Wait CBS showed the tournament of roses parade? Ive only seen it on HGTV and ABC.

In recent years it's been on all the big 4 networks and HGTV (Perhaps other cable channels as well), which I've never understood why that is necessary. Even with Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, it's usually only been NBC and CBS to show it. I'd think that ABC would want to have exclusive rights to it since they have the Rose Bowl.

Correct me if I'm wrong but hasn't NBC always aired the parade?

I also found out NBC will be airing its two soaps on New Years Day. I remember CBS use to air classic soap episodes on holidays, but the last time they did that on was New Years Day 2003, at least to my knowledge. They claimed it was too expensive to dig through their archives...maybe true but still ::)

CBS did not televise the 2006 Parade, either. That was the first year they declined to offer their own parade coverage since the 60s.

Yes, for something like 45 years until 2005. NBC's had coverage for a bit longer, but those darn Bowl Games have eaten into the time. Frankly, if NBC wants to save some cash under NBCU2.0, cut the Parade coverage completely. No point in covering it if you don't plan to stay longer than 90 minutes. BTW: Travel Channel and Discovery HD will also have the parade.

They might, but why would they want to give up a good thing. The exposure for Pasadena is good. (And, I think they're somehow prohibited from selling exclusive rights to begin with.)

KTLA in Los Angeles will be simulcasting its wall-to-wall coverage online:
Quite useful if you are watching the station's coverage on The Travel Channel which, regretfully, has commercial breaks unlike KTLA which doesn't during the live show.

I don't know about this year but in past years HGTV programming has given way to the Rose bowl Parade all day long. After the live broadcast was over they would show it taped the rest of the day. this was very useful if I was intrested in the early Bowl games and didn't want to miss the parade either. I'd just watch the parade during a later airing.

And I find it odd that NBC isn't airing the parade. Especially since NBC has no bowl games on its schedule for the first time in what is probably decades.

From the schedules I've seen, NBC is running the parade from 11-12:30 Eastern, letting the affiliates have 12:30-1, and running their soaps as usual from 1-3. Even in my market where the soaps normally run from 11-1, they are running from 1-3 that day.

A little late but..

You can't have exclusive rights for the Rose Parade (or the Macy's Parade, or the Orange Bowl Parade, or any other parade outside Disneyland) because it runs on city-owned streets and therefore is open to the public. Any station can put a camera on a street corner and show the parade as it passes.

Of course, stations work with the Rose Parade (which is happy to have the publicity for Pasadena) to get float info, marching order, and so on, and they build special stands for their cameras. But if, say, Channel 2 in LA wanted to show the parade (even if CBS doesn't), they could.

What? No special "exclusive" permit granted by the city to a specific tv station or network to cover an event?
No permit needed?

I honestly thought that the networks got the same treatment that vendors would most likely recieve, since they do occupy space at a special event, instead of just being present on a City street.

The glaring exception to the above statement I think is The Hollywood Christmas Parade. Yes, it's on city-run streets, but there would be no parade without the financial backing of The Tribune Co. and KTLA. Years ago (can't remember), they pretty much BOUGHT the event. It's their show from start to finish.

There's a difference - the broadcast networks can claim First Amendment protection.

Doesn't a network at least in some cases get the exclusive rights to the official name of the parade? I noticed at Thanksgiving that NBC used the official name of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and carried it from in front of Macy's, but CBS only referred to it as the Thanksgiving Day Parade. I don't know how long that has gone on, unless it's been in recent years because of Macy's becoming a national chain.

They would have to find a place to rent to park their trucks. The event is on a public street, but the parade and the adjacent landowners control transmission locations. The KTLA booth pays exclusive rent to an Elks Club or something.
