CBS RADIO PRESS RELEASE FOR NY'S 92.3 NOW FM, DEBUTING 3/11/09 @ 5PM ET

Didn't they originally change 92.3 to rock after the failed attempt to turn the original KTU to a CHR? (Jay Thomas, Dan Ingram)

I am surprised that they are giving the world two days notice. By giving notice:

WRXP has time to make changes to pick up former K-Rock listeners.

Z-100 has time to meet the challenge of a director competitor.

Yes. But it was "different" ownership, different time.

It WAS Infinity Broadcasting that owned 92.3 'KTU but it didn't merge with CBS back then. Disco had been "dead" in the early 80's with a couple of dance tracks out there. Most of the 'KTU listenership had migrated over to Kiss-FM and 'BLS. And with Z-100 just launching and eventually taking the city by storm, there was no hope for 'KTU to last as a CHR. They did the best decision that they could then by going K-Rock as well as landing Howard Stern, who was recently fired from W-NNNNNNNNNN-BC!

Over 20 years ago....and with two CHRs in the market. Completely different situation today.

meanwhile, you got a CHR in New York that is STILL a ratings powerhouse - it's gonna be interesting to see how "Now 92.3" goes up against them...

CBS Radio didn't give the world two days notice. Opie did. Once Opie did that, CBS Radio HAD to do something!

Now FM...very edgy, creative branding decision. The 'Now Radio' moniker was originally used by several Drake-influenced Top 40 stations (i.e. WRKO/Boston and CFOX/Montreal) way back in the 1960s !!

well i was listening to booker last night and he went to say something about the switch and the lady that came on at the end of his show with him said no dont say anything let there be some anticipation and that was the last live voice heard!!

All the hits and nothing but the hits so help us God right NOW on 92.3. The 92.3 pledge to the NY listeners! ;D

I guess I won't need to aim my antenna east anymore to get KC 101... I'll have enough top 40 in NYC...

As of now, 92.3 is what we called "Now" and it is a Top 40 station where they will compete against the "Flame Throwin'" Z-100, because Z-100 has been top 40 for about 25 years since it first went on the air in 1983 under Scott Shannon when he was a program director at the time. The CHR Wars has just begun.

Before I would explain about the new format at 92.3 "Now", let me tell you all about it, but it has nothing to do with New York City. I remember back in the early to mid-90's when I was in the Hudson Valley listening area, the two top 40 stations are WSPK's "K-104" which has been top 40 for about almost 30 years and of course WBPM's original "B-94" when it was also a top 40 station for a long time when it was at 94.3 as a staple of hit radio for many years from 1984 until 1999 where they flipped to "Jammin' Oldies" as "Rhythm 94.3" until 2001, and then "Cool 94.3" was an oldies station until 2003 and finally flipped to country as "Kicks 94.3" after they changed its call letters to WKXP and then "The Wolf". The WBPM calls was moved in 2004 as "Cool. 92.9" as oldies until 2007 and then flipped to Classic Hits.

I remember WBPM's original "B-94" when it was top 40 for many years back in 1993 until 1999, but it was a competitor to "K-104", the station had Boyz II Men, Janet Jackson, Hootie and the Blowfish, Blues Traveler, Sheryl Crow, Keith Sweat and many other artists that I do remember back then. Prior to "B-94", it was just an automated top 40 station before my time when WBPM started around 1975 after they changed its call letters from WGHQ-FM where they usually played easy listening and beautiful music when the station first launched back in the 1960's. The "B-94" name which was synonymous with the Hudson Valley for years at 94.3, is now being heard in Pittsburgh, PA at 93.7, originally Pittsburgh had a "B-94" back in the 80's.

To get back to the New York subject, I guess 92.3 "Now" is the station like "AMP Radio" did in Los Angeles, but I hope CBS will be happy to have this Top 40 format to New York and they will be going after Z-100. Good luck!

what ever made k107 k-104's relay die for the northern suburbs of NYC

I remember "K-107" back around 2003 and 2004 when it was on 107.1, it was a simulcast of WSPK's "K-104". that station was short lived until "The Peak" came along. Prior to the simulcast, it was Country as "Y-107" and Spanish as "Rumba 107" and that station flopped for a year after Big City gave up the format and went out of business.
