As of now, 92.3 is what we called "Now" and it is a Top 40 station where they will compete against the "Flame Throwin'" Z-100, because Z-100 has been top 40 for about 25 years since it first went on the air in 1983 under Scott Shannon when he was a program director at the time. The CHR Wars has just begun.
Before I would explain about the new format at 92.3 "Now", let me tell you all about it, but it has nothing to do with New York City. I remember back in the early to mid-90's when I was in the Hudson Valley listening area, the two top 40 stations are WSPK's "K-104" which has been top 40 for about almost 30 years and of course WBPM's original "B-94" when it was also a top 40 station for a long time when it was at 94.3 as a staple of hit radio for many years from 1984 until 1999 where they flipped to "Jammin' Oldies" as "Rhythm 94.3" until 2001, and then "Cool 94.3" was an oldies station until 2003 and finally flipped to country as "Kicks 94.3" after they changed its call letters to WKXP and then "The Wolf". The WBPM calls was moved in 2004 as "Cool. 92.9" as oldies until 2007 and then flipped to Classic Hits.
I remember WBPM's original "B-94" when it was top 40 for many years back in 1993 until 1999, but it was a competitor to "K-104", the station had Boyz II Men, Janet Jackson, Hootie and the Blowfish, Blues Traveler, Sheryl Crow, Keith Sweat and many other artists that I do remember back then. Prior to "B-94", it was just an automated top 40 station before my time when WBPM started around 1975 after they changed its call letters from WGHQ-FM where they usually played easy listening and beautiful music when the station first launched back in the 1960's. The "B-94" name which was synonymous with the Hudson Valley for years at 94.3, is now being heard in Pittsburgh, PA at 93.7, originally Pittsburgh had a "B-94" back in the 80's.
To get back to the New York subject, I guess 92.3 "Now" is the station like "AMP Radio" did in Los Angeles, but I hope CBS will be happy to have this Top 40 format to New York and they will be going after Z-100. Good luck!
