CBS rebrands The Early Show to CBS This Morning on January 9th, 2012

You can put all the lipstick you want on a pig and it's still......a pig.

Speaking of which, I wonder if Gayle King is readying all of those Oprah stories to regale the viewers with. :D

We should have an informal R-I pool on when CBS puts this disaster out of its inevitable misery.

This iteration probably ends January 2013. If not before.

Who even watches network morning news anymore, anyway? People who go to work before 7 probably tune in to the local newscasts, especially for traffic and weather info. With more and more working moms, who actually watches TV between 7 and 9 any more?

The retired?

I have to agree with Dan Dennis. I have never been able to tolerate any of these morning shows for more than a few minutes. First, I want to be informed in the morning - I want hard news, not a lot of fluff and "lifestyle" features. So in the past, I would have much rather watched a news network like CNN, or a local news program.

But this is the internet age, so since the mid 90s, I never even turn on the TV - just fire up my computer and check news, traffic, and weather on the web.

The other factor is the commercial load on these morning TV shows - which, IMO, is intolerable.

It might be a good idea for CBS to turn over the 7-9am time frame and let their own affiliates use it to carry their own local news. The Curse of Captain Kangaroo still lives. Only CBS.

Today does the first 21 minutes commercial-free and, most days, has a high news content. IMHO, it's the only tolerable part of the Today show.

Most of the CBS affiliates would probably love this, at least for the 7am hour. More local relevance and revenue.

I've long thought and am increasingly convinced that there isn't room for three national network morning shows, especially with all the other options available.

The only reason CBS continues to plug away is because they see themselves as one of the big boys that needs to be on the playing field, even if it means getting its butt kicked.

Even in third place, it's a money maker. That alone is a reason to stay in the game.

Good thinking. CBS needs to just cut its perennial losses and make it a local chunk of time. Stations get one more hour to themselves outside of news, news departments can expand their morning newscasts, etc.

Which doesn't benefit CBS. Lost national revenue is hardly good for the bottom line.

The CBS affiliate here in Nashville already has local news from 4:00 to 7:00 a.m. on the main channel, with one more hour from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. on the subchannel. If they were to go all the way to 9:00 a.m., that would give them FIVE hours of local news in the morning! Wouldn't that be a record? Does anyone stay on the air for FIVE hours with local news in the mornings?

Several Tribune stations do more than 5 hours. I know WXIN/Indianapolis has "Fox 59 Morning News" from 4:30a-10a and I've read on this board about some of their sister stations with similar hours.

One of my two Fox affiliates, WGHP, has news from 5-10 AM; I also believe WAGA (Fox o&o) does the same thing. But neither has a network morning show; if WTVF ever went to five hours that probably would be a record for an affiliate of the old-line networks. One of my two CBS affiliates, WFMY, could easily expand its "Good Morning Show" (5-8 AM presently) to five hours
as well (they carry "The Early Show" from 8 to 10).

But I have to agree with homerjay: CBS isn't going to give up the revenue from a morning show. They'll keep trying until something clicks. And it won't be the triumphal return of Captain Kangaroo, I can assure you.

I expect Harry Smith to be brought back sometime.
Not gonna happen.

I saw him on NBC News because the VCR starts a couple of minutes early for "Jeopardy", or at least I think that's what happened. It is WEIRD to see him there.

The only way CBS is going to fix their morning show woes is to bring back Captain Kangaroo.
You think John McDonough would be interested?

Actually, I was reading Pat Cashin is reviving the character.

Well, CBS did The Morning Show-a predecessor to CBS This Morning-With Marriette Hartley, & Bob Saget as anchors, and Mark McEwen as The Meteorologist. Whatever happened to them, beats me. But I think Bob Saget went on to host "America's Funniest Home Videos", and he's also The narrator of The CBS sitcom "How I Met Your Mother".

bob saget is an interesting guy.he can do family style shows (full house and americas funniest videos) or dirty humor(he has a funny HBO special that is on dvd and tells a hillarious version of the aristocrats joke in the aristocrats movie) equily well.i like both styles.

He thinks Bob Saget went on to host AFV? Yeah - he also starred in a little show called Full House at the same time. The man really cashed in.

My favorite joke from the Bob Saget Roast:

Bob Saget walks into a bar.
The bartender asks; "What'll you have?"
Saget replies; "I'll have a Bob Saget."
Bartender asks; "How do you make a Bob Saget?"
Saget replies; "You give me a shot. I suck at it for eight years. Then you give me a hundred million dollars.

Here in Phoenix, KTVK (independent) and KSAZ (Fox) both air 5.5 hours of news from 4:30am to 10:00am.

Saget was on the show, but not as anchor. IIRC, he did some sort of comedy segments. The anchor was Rolland Smith, who I think was at WCBS for a long time, and who I recall watching whn I was a wee little dude on WANE on Fort Wayne.
