CBS should simulcast KYW on one of their FM's HD's. What does you think?

Here in Philly, CBS Radio has a couple options on the FM band: WOGL and something called FREE-FM. It happens in market #7 (Clear Channel's KTRH-AM on KLOL-HD2) so why not in market #6?

Free FM is going to do Alt Rock on WYSP-2. WYSP-2 is streaming already on the web at www.wysp.com

Put it on WOGL.

If a tree falls in an empty forest, does it make a noise? What does you think?

They can increase their cume by handfuls of people! They must be drooling in sales.

This is almost as exciting as when KYW started broadcasting in AM Stereo.

Next, they should start selling recordings of their special series' - available on either 8-track or Beta.

So that's a "no" vote then?

I was thinking WOGL would be the better candidate. If I had an HD radio, I'd listen to KYW just as much as I do now but I'd much rather hear it on 98.1 HD than on 1060 AM.

Last time I was in Philly recently, I did not hear IBUZ on 94.1 and 98.1, so they don't yet have the IBAC machine turned on.<P ID="signature">______________

A Successful AM, HD2, and an arbitron diary

If HD actually becomes successful, the KYW HD2 thing is
actually not a bad idea. That being said, I have seen other
posts about removing it completely from 1060 and putting it
either on an FM position, or on an HD2 exclusively.

A couple of factors are at play here.

The first is that it wouldn't make sense for KYW to totally
lose 1060. They have a succesful AM station. That feat
alone is an accomplishment. If they replaced the news
format, what would replace it on 1060? We already have
sports and talk on AM in Philly. Any other AM format is a
loser. There is no other viable format to replace the news
on 1060, so CBS would end up losing a profitable AM station.
I don't think that will happen.

The other factor is obvious. Unless HD2 becomes standard in
every car and on every portable or home receiver, a lot of
listeners who would tune into KYW would be at a loss.

Also, how do (would) the ratings work? If WOGL simulcasted
KYW on HD2 and I tune in, which station gets the credit in
an arbitron diary? Is it WOGL or KYW?

Re: A Successful AM, HD2, and an arbitron diary

I'm thinking PPM's will take care of this issue. Surely the signal picked up by the meter will be different on WOGL's HD stations than on the main FM. It'll know which one you're listening to. The rating for a KYW HD2 simulcast would likely get folded into KYW's number like a local simulcast (ex: WGBZ/WZBZ) does nowadays.

94.1 and 98.1 still dont have IBoC turned on yet.
I think it would be great idea to have KYW on 98.1 HD 2 but the bottom line is they need to have a decent HD coverage area not some 200 watt light bulb at the top of the roxborough candle stick that gets out 15 miles. KYW on 98.1 HD 2 would vastly improve coverage for KYW in their current am shadow to the northeast i.e. Bucks and Mercer counties.
