CBS Sports Radio On FM In L.A.: It's Coming

So CBS Radio announced that they will be launching yet another sports radio station on FM in Atlanta. Once it's on the air, CBS will own a sports radio station, either on AM or FM, in each of the top ten markets... except this one.

I don't think CBS is stupid. They know they would like an L.A. clearance for their new sports radio network. And with the Atlanta news, it's only a matter of time.

Bank on it.

If they could do that to "Dave", they could do the same thing to "Jack". That would be unfortunate because we already have one too many sports stations in this town (two if you count KLAA - but why would you?) and I happen to like Jack. But when Vic the Brick is featured prominently on a station, you have too many stations and not enough talent to fill them - period.

If another sports station must be, than the humane thing to do would be to take KABC out back and put it out of its misery and put the sports station on 790. But Cumulus clearly has talk plans for KABC, and you know CBS will want FM clearance for the partnership - that is my understanding, that the CBS Sports radio project is in some sort of partnership with Cumulus - so Jack is the odd "man" out.

Possible lifeline though - I know with Jhani's guidance, KTWV is doing much better in the ratings, but what is their revenue and net profit as compared to Jack? Aren't Jack's demos better than KTWV's? Is it possible Jack could survive this new sports Wave?

I'm sure that David will let us know about billing. The Wave will probably be the one to go sports. But really, there is an over saturation of sports talk in LA already, so it doesn't make a lot of sense. The Wave should just get it over with and go directly at KOST. That's the only way they'll really have a fighting chance to survive. But this is radio in 2012, so they'll probably go sports on 94.7...

Even if a market has an oversatuation of AM sports stations it doesn't matter because so many listeners never listen to AM..

IIRC Detroit had a couple of poorly rated AM sports stations. Then CBS put sports on FM and it soon became a huge station in the market, sometimes even ranked #1 6+ (imagine the male demos).

How's AMP 97.1 doing in the ratings, and in billing?

One of CBS' five FM stations in town (Jack, The Wave, AMP, K-Earth, and KROQ), 97.1's format is the newest; plus that frequency has a history of carrying live sports (Raiders, SportsUSA NFL games, etc.).

It's doubled billing in the three years since it launched, and growing. And it is more or less at parity with KROQ as the leading CBS station in "the" sales demo.

KAMP is one of the most successful PPM era launches.

The laggard in the cluster is KTWV, which is somewhere around 20th in that same sales demo, waaaaay below the other 4 stations.

And actually, wouldn't it make more sense to put the sports on KTWV and sell the male demos in concert with other CBS male-dominated stations Jack and KROQ (and KRTH?), rather than pair sports on 93.1 with (older) women-dominated KTWV? I think Jack may be safe and the Wave may be the one to get washed away.

Then where will I get my Kenny G fix? ;)

There seems to be two formats "afloat" right now.
One, is THE WAVE which has changed music lists so dramatically--it's not the wave, anymore.
Smooth jazz, across the usa, is same--the music lists are all a combination of a lt of R+B female, Etc.
It is obviously evolving into something, but it's not "Smooth Jazz".
The other is DOUG FM, and it's clones.
DOUG has installed this STORQ, which means the music load will vary market to market, as it to evolves into something else.
If more "sports" continues to enter the markets, what will exit is MUSIC
Sports, Is A Form Of TALK, as is NEWS,
So How Much "TALK" can one market support?
COUNTRY is Had To penetrate, Audience Loyality Has Always Been A Country Plus.
They Don't Change Very Easy--If At All, Once They Get Use To An Artist, Or Station.

So, As Sports Comes in, And Music Gets STALE (DOUG,SMOOTH JAZZ)
The Audience For Music, Will Become More Focused.
One Of BILL DRAKE'S Famous Quotes, "The audience does not go away, it goes somewhere else."
So Where Will The Audience For MUSIC go?
To TALK,SPORTS, NEWS, POLITICAL COMMENT?
Not Likely.

@JustPassingThrough: If you read one of the final sentences on the link in the original post of this thread, you might find something that'll suffice. ::)

Since CBS is partnering with Cumulus on this initiative I wouldn't rule out KLOS as the new home of CBS Sports Radio. Mark & Brian are finished and they could then do away with the rest of the AFTRA salaries they are paying over there. Heritage doesn't mean much to Cumulus and replacing warm bodies with cheap, syndicated programming appears to be their MO. An FM sports station could possibly pick up a couple of local franchises as well, once their AM contracts run out.

That was just awful. It looks like they throw Cumulus into the mix with their "high as Cheech and Chong" reference too. I feel like I was beaten to death by puns.

My guess is JACK or KLOS!! Though KLOS has been around for soooo long....And JACK bills like crazy?

KTWV has much more upside potential then the other 2...Especially with Jhani Kaye steering the ship.

KTWV will likely keep tweaking to compete more directly with KOST.

Certainly room in the market for 2 slightly different sounding A/C's.

It's been more thann two years since the migration from Smooth Jazz to an AC hybrid, and the 25-54 numbers are, if anything, a little lower in rank than before.

Certainly room in the market for 2 slightly different sounding A/C's.

If you look at the KBIG numbers, it looks more like the opportunity is on the lower end of AC, not the smooth end.

I suppose KLOS can also be in the conversation, especially with the end of the Mark & Brian era. After all, we've seen a longtime rocker in Boston effectively be replaced by a new FM sports talker...

San Francisco does not have a CBS Sports station. 680 KNBR (Cumulus), 1050 KNBR (Cumulus), 95.7 The Game KGMZ (Entercom).

Although it has been rumored for a long, long time, that CBS will flip 'LIVE 105' KITS to Sports. Now I'm sure that rumor will resurface soon.

The upside to CBS getting Cumulus to flip KLOS to CBS Radio Sports is that Jack benefits. If they flip The Wave, they still have Jack battling KLOS.
