So CBS Radio announced that they will be launching yet another sports radio station on FM in Atlanta. Once it's on the air, CBS will own a sports radio station, either on AM or FM, in each of the top ten markets... except this one.
I don't think CBS is stupid. They know they would like an L.A. clearance for their new sports radio network. And with the Atlanta news, it's only a matter of time.
Bank on it.
There seems to be two formats "afloat" right now.
One, is THE WAVE which has changed music lists so dramatically--it's not the wave, anymore.
Smooth jazz, across the usa, is same--the music lists are all a combination of a lt of R+B female, Etc.
It is obviously evolving into something, but it's not "Smooth Jazz".
The other is DOUG FM, and it's clones.
DOUG has installed this STORQ, which means the music load will vary market to market, as it to evolves into something else.
If more "sports" continues to enter the markets, what will exit is MUSIC
Sports, Is A Form Of TALK, as is NEWS,
So How Much "TALK" can one market support?
COUNTRY is Had To penetrate, Audience Loyality Has Always Been A Country Plus.
They Don't Change Very Easy--If At All, Once They Get Use To An Artist, Or Station.
So, As Sports Comes in, And Music Gets STALE (DOUG,SMOOTH JAZZ)
The Audience For Music, Will Become More Focused.
One Of BILL DRAKE'S Famous Quotes, "The audience does not go away, it goes somewhere else."
So Where Will The Audience For MUSIC go?
To TALK,SPORTS, NEWS, POLITICAL COMMENT?
Not Likely.
