CBS Sports Radio To Lose Its Morning Show And Its Eye

https://radioinsight.com/headlines/182421/cbs-sports-radio-to-lose-its-morning-show-and-its-eye/

What interesting me in this article:
"The acquisition also required the network to remove the CBS Sports name by the end of 2020."

My question is what would the network be renamed? Unless they decide to reup with CBS brand license and keep the name. I can't imagine what it would be renamed if they didn't. The only sports radio network that has changed names is SB Nation Radio and it's been a bunch of different names.

Yes that's an interesting observation. There's obviously more to the story than is being reported.

Originally CBS Sports Radio Network was a partnership between CBS Sports and Cumulus. Then when CBS sold the radio division to Entercom, that company became involved. Entercom has a limited license to the name CBS Radio and the logo. So I imagine this has to do with the licensing agreement. I'm sure there's a cost to license that name. Entercom operates the network, and CBS owns the name. The license for the logo ends at the end of the year. It's primarily a branded talk show network. I'm not aware that there are any CBS Sports events carried by the radio network. So why pay for the name when you don't get any content as a partner?

So yes, what would they rename it? Entercom Sports Radio Network? I don't know. Just a thought.

The article seems to indicate that only the eye logo is in play. If they think the CBS brand still has value, I'd imagine they'll extend the deal for the name and design a new logo for use on the website. There are countless names out there for a sports network, and remember, this isn't ESPN or Fox we're talking about, it's a radio sports network that is usually overnight filler programming or the main programming for the third station in a sports-saturated market. What's wrong with Entercom Sports Radio?

One shared element between CBS Sports Radio Network and CBS Sports Network is Jim Rome. His radio show has been simulcast on the cable channel. But who knows what the future of the cable channel is now that CBS has re-merged with Viacom. I imagine that's a separate deal between Jim and CBS TV. Of course Imus had his radio show simulcast on MSNBC at one time. A CBS radio show carried on an NBC TV channel. Anything can happen. Leave it to the lawyers.

Entercom was already running with their own sports network as radio.com sports

Entercom has announced a content distribution partnership with The Action Network, a media company featuring news, information and an industry app focused on sports betting and fantasy content. The "broad scale" agreement utilizes the reach of RADIO.COM Sports, Entercom's national sports platform and The Action Network's analysis throughout the 2019 football season. The partnership will feature unique broadcast content on Entercom's portfolio of 35 all-sports stations, as well as digital content on RADIO.COM.

Entercom recently announced the launch of "You Better You Bet," a daily, live sports betting show hosted by Nick Kostos with 24 hours of live podcast content every week as part of this new native digital content offering.

"We are committed to make RADIO.COM Sports and our local broadcast stations the #1 destination for fans to access the very best sports betting information available," said Entercom President of Sports Mike Dee. "Nobody is better at informing the sports bettor in this fast-growing space than The Action Network."

I submit they try the name "Entercom Sports Programming Network", just to see how quickly those mouse lawyers jump!
