Chairman Carr asks networks to air 'pro-America content' to mark nation's 250th birthday

Here we go again another day and another announcement by Chairman Carr. Also how will this work in practice.

He lost me at "...start of each broadcast day." Guess he goes to bed with a glass of warm milk at 8 and doesn't know that the vast majority of stations are on 24 hours.
I can only imagine what the ask will be when their cult leader dies. Hours long puff pieces on how great a human being Chump was.

There is nothing in the communications act that gives the FCC any role in programming. We don't have a government-mandated media.

All they're supposed to do is apply the laws created by congress. Not institute media campaigns.

Patriotism should come from the people, not imposed by the government.

We urge licensees to voluntarily praise and worship Glorious Leader at sunrise

He was specifically talking about TV. Even when they weren't on-air 24 hours a day, did TV stations normally sign on with the National Anthem? I've heard of them playing at sign-off, but not necessarily at sign-on. And some opted for other music specifically composed for their state/region, such as NJN's "Positively New Jersey":

Oh goody! I've been waiting for this commandment from Chairman Carr. I have just the programming that will fulfill his requirements (though not necessarily the desires of his boss):

1) Why the U.S. Supreme Court today found the tariffs President Trump imposed to be a violation of the U.S. Constitution;
2) What the Jim Crow laws in the South were and how they affected the ability of African-americans to live, work, and vote between the late 1800s and the 1960s;
3) a celebration of Martin Luther King, Jr. and how he assisted in helping the American dream apply to more people;
4) the great accomplishments of America's first black president and how they compare with those of President Trump; and
5) moving tributes to some of America's greatest songwriters during the rock era including the teams of Doc Pomus and Mort Schuman and Burt Bacharak and Hal David and the solo efforts of Bob Dylan.

I'm sure the rest of you can add to the types of programs that will fulfill Mr. Carr's wish list but that might make the current U.S. President angry that he ever thought of the idea.

On a more serious note, many public radio stations, such as Phoenix's KJZZ, have run stories on national parks and other often overlooked places in the state of Arizona for years now, and I really don't think there is anything new in Mr. Carr's demands here, at least for the public radio sector.

The announcement was made by the chairman, not the other commissioners. There was a public meeting on Wednesday, and it apparently not on the agenda. There was no vote. No comments from the other commissioners, at least not yet.

Nexstar stations are airing it at 4am

Maybe CBS can dust off and re-air their Bicentennial Minutes with a new title. Except if Carr wants to have all this content to be celebrating King Trump.

And if a broadcaster has any reluctance to air such content, the FCC provides a none-too-subtle nudge. It reminds operators that such content it is “consistent with their longstanding public interest obligations” which say stations must be responsive to the needs and interests of their local communities.

Of course it's in the public interest to do whatever the chairman wants.

Schoolhouse Rock episode of the day

This is utterly repugnant
Of course it's in the public interest to do whatever the chairman wants.
And how many will just buckle yet again

Ah, life in the North Korea of the Western Hemisphere.

Isn’t he a member of the party that pretended to decry government overreach? How is “encouraging” (just wait for the strong arming to start) propaganda not precisely that?

Its another of these lets compare the Putin Administration to Trump for a decade. How Chairman Carr runs the FCC is just one of them.
