'Champ' radio to swap from rock to sports talk

Champ will pick up the Pats and Vt. Lake Monsters... WRSA 1420 St Albans and
WFAD 1490 Middlebury will, like 1390, go Fox Sports instead of ESPN

The Free Press article says WNMR is in Shelburne (thought they were licensed to Dannemora NY,
but maybe the studios are in Shelburne?)

Wonder if WEEI would ever consider having a station up in the Champ. Valley for its network?
The 1390, 1420, and 1490 outlets are going Fox Sports with 101.3 doing ESPN, but conceivably
the AMs could have picked up WEEI programming

"We are over-saturated. There are seven rock stations in this market," Barlow said.

I count six. And you can't compare Triple A stations to Champ's current format, Ken. Is he including CHOM? Or Frank out of Barre? If he thinks Kool 105 is "rock," then he's really lost his marbles.

He was counting Champ. 7 stations in the market, thus his observation that the market is over-saturated, and he needed to make a change.

Did they make flip at midnight? not in area, don't know. Champ 101.3 website has a simple
banner and nothing else. There is a facebook page for ESPN 101.3 though. If anything it
would kind of make sense to keep the "Champ" identity--there's a sports related
term, we are the Champ-ions my friends...the sports Champ for the Champlain Valley...?

3 days in, and they don't appear to have a functioning website. Sick company.

You could try listening, in order to form an opinion of the radio station, instead of trying to be lazy and leaf through a website to form your thoughts.

Just sayin'.

I'll make sure to tune in from 4-6 tomorrow for what (presumably) is the only show on the station worth hearing.

You guys realize that everybody with an IQ of at least 80 thinks that Colin Cowherd is an ass, right?

Thank God Will.....now your knowledge of programming can also start saving the big national formats as well as the lowly Burlington-Plattsburgh's of the world. We are SO lucky to have you!

These shows got a one share on the other station that tried them. What chance do you have? And if you do win, it's because of your Pats/Cats contracts.

You had the market's rock franchise, and you pissed it away for a bunch of national blowhards.

Listening now...this local image voice/Local SportsCenter anchor Dave Hunter sounds like a cross between Arlo Guthrie and Bob Dylan.

The first segment today was an interview with the Albany head basketball coach. It ran on a little long for my taste...but Rob Ryan was well prepared for the conversation, and I suppose it's not easy to fill a 2-hour show every day.

Still listening...and I just heard my third Local SportsCenter segment in 35 minutes. That's overdoing it, guys. Let's limit those to three an hour tops.

That's all you have for a rebuttal, huh? Same old refrain from you.

Go taunt more of your former employees that you fired about their new jobs.

To recap your argument: National content sucks, but the local content is too much.

You never cease to amaze and confuse.

And you need to get over the rock thing. Not for nothing, but rock is dying cross country. It's a fragmented and split baby, and as an industry, we've done a horrible job of musically programming to men. Meanwhile, up and down the east coast, sports talk is #1 or #2 in most male demos.

So to recap your 2nd argument: Yeah, a non-local, small signal AM did pull a 1 share, which means that on an FM with tender love and care to focus on things that men care about in the local market, will do (hopefully) much better.

Your trees are in the way of your forest.

We don't need to hear the local HS basketball schedule FIVE times an hour. Three is fine. I will tip my cap to you guys for doing local sports updates. WVMT didn't have those when they carried ESPN when I worked there. You're doing ESPN better than they did.

You never cease to amaze and confuse.

I don't know, I think I elaborate my opinions very clearly around here.

Classic rock is a timeless format whose stalwart records have been handed down to my generation (and even the next one.) But you're right, that's beating a dead horse - you're sports now. You guys made your bed.

Sports talk isn't 1 or 2 with this 27 year old male...I find the Boston stations obnoxious and insulting to my intelligence. I don't want to hear Michael Felger trash Randy Moss. I like Randy Moss. But, hey, apparently most people like fake arguments and controversy. Rob and Rich didn't do that when I listened today...they're very genteel. Maybe Rob should call somebody in Burlington sports a ******bag on tomorrow's show.

You know what? I'd like that. I would honest to God love that. You think I want Rich Haskell to fail? Don't forget that I'm from the NNE. I've known Rich Haskell a long time. My parents were fans of his when he was on the Wizard. I've heard him announce batters my entire life.

Your trees are in the way of your forest.

I said Rob Ryan prepared well for the interview. Take the compliment. Christ. Just because I call things the way I see them doesn't mean I'm directly rooting against you.
